There are worse places in Manchester IMHO.....My in-laws live in one of the two remaining non-student properties on their road in Fallowfield (15-20 years ago it was all families) and know that when they sell up in the next year or two they will inevitably end up selling to a student landlord, as no-one else would buy there.
Isn't by any chance one of the streets near Maine Road ?A house isn't a home without a cat.

Thanks everyone for your help and links. I wondered about Levenshulme, are transport links to Oxford Road good from there? Why has it had a reputation in the past?
Good points about selling on if we did buy, I like the sound of Didsbury anyway.
Cheers0 -
I lived behind Sainsburys in F/field for a year and in Withington (Mauldeth Rd West) for a year and never had any hassle - would definitely recommend these areas in terms of transport links and convenience.
Transport links from Levenshulme to Oxford Rd aren't great - no direct bus that I know of so you would prob need to take one bus into town and then another down to Oxford Rd although things could have changed. Great bus service from Levenshulme into Manchester centre though.
Have you thought about Rusholme (between F/field and the City centre - aka the curry mile!). I have friends living there and it seems to be on the up with bars etc spilling over from the main area around Witworth Park and the uni buildings. Might be cheaper than F/field and Withington.0 -
I've lived in levenshulme all my life longsight is fine up to the midway,
fallowfield/ladybarn are good,
but there is crime about everywhere,
my two sons wonder and go where they please they are 17 and 18 with no fear.
my daughter is 7 and we are are happy knit in levenshulme...:beer:0 -

Cheers Bob, I see that about the spokes, makes sense that buses may not be direct, although I think Manc is amazing for public transport!
Must get a decent map, the ones I found on the net don't show Longsight or Midway.
DD is already a frequent visitor to curry mile - no wonder she has no money left!
she moves back into halls soon so i'll try and have a little drive around - although driving in Manc scares me!!

consider chorlton and northenden too as more affordable, but up and coming areas0

Northenden, by student commuting standards, is a long way out of town.A house isn't a home without a cat.

Chorlton is very popular with students and has great transport links. Also fab shops and bars:beer:
Fallowfield, Victoria Park, Levensulme, Longsight, Hulme are also big student areas- With so many universities, Manchester has loads of student areas
They all have good bus links to the unis and some good pubs and bars:beer:
No where is crime free but like everywhere you get good locks and get good insurance and you don't take silly risks!
I woudn't live anywhere else
