Added spreadsheet row ignores column formula

In Open Office, all it says about adding rows is:
Inserts a new row above the active cell. The number of rows inserted correspond to the number of rows selected. The existing rows are moved downward.
But the new row's cells don't observe the formulae already set for the columns, so I have to change it manually. Am I missing something?

    What do you mean by 'observe'? Don't know about OO, but in Excel inserted rows or columns are always empty. Formulas [STRIKE]and formatting [/STRIKE]have to be copied from old cells.
    Beware that if the formula refers to a cell above, after inserting it keeps referring to the old one, not to the new cell in the inserted row, so you need to change formula(s) in the row below the inserted one(s) as well.

    Since we don't know what your formula is or formulae are, cannot really advise but let's assume you are adding a column of figures and you want to add another row to make that column of figures longer, providing you add the row within the range specified by the formula the new row will be included in the formula and range extended accordingly. If you add a row above or below the range of the formula, as noted in post #2 any formula will be ignored.

    I did originally type formulae but Firefox's (American) spellchecker flagged it up.
    It's a simple bank account where deposits are recorded in column B, withdrawals in C and the running total (balance) in D. Thus D20=D19+B2O-C20 but newly inserted row 21 ignores the formula so D21 is blank. D22 then becomes D20+B22-C22, D23=D21+B23-C23 etc..

    Ctrl + D might just copy the contents of the cell above, but the dragging....

    "Hover over the right hand bottom corner of cell D20, a little cross will appear. Hold down the left mouse button and drag it down to D22. "

    ..... method is probably better.
