1 Car, 2 Policies, Legal or not ?

Hi, First post on here

My Question, is it ok to have 2 car insurance polices on one car (overlapping)

I put a quote in a month and a half early and found a brilliant deal of £400, this is saved and I have till the 12/01/2016 to decide if I want to take out the policy

But my current policy is active till the 25/01/2016 so if I was to take the policy out there would be an overlap, I couldn't cancel as I believe I would lose the NCB I would have accrued this year.

The current policy is all paid and the new policy would be getting paid in full. I did a new comparison with identical details today and the cheapest came up £130 more than the £400 I was quoted at the beginning of the month,

Any help on the matter would be Brilliant, including how often the insurance company's asses there prices.

  • If your current policy is still running and has your no claims, where will you get the no claims for the second policy?

Take the policy but tell them the start date will be 25/1/16.
  • I would have just left it at my 8 years no claims, so that after the overlap is over,it would essentially be correct

    and

I dont think I can get them to alter the start date of the policy as then the saved policy wouldn't be valid.

You can't use NCD on 2 policies at the same time. Therein lies your problem.

You don't have 8yrs NCB, its being used already, you have zero unless you cancel the original policy and revert back to 8 or see it out and get 9.

Go through the quote process again and enter the 25/01/16 as the start date. You may find the policy is even cheaper as a lot of insurers ramp up the costs the closer to renewal you get.

Answering the subject title.....it's not illegal to hold two insurance policies covering the same risk. It's not a good idea though. Each insurer will pay half the damages and you're paying two premiums.

The insurance companies assess their pricing quite regularly. Sod's law would mean a day before you get the final quote so I can see where you're coming from. It's a chance you'll probably be better off taking.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • As someone else has said, just revise the start date on the saved quote.
