Use by dates...

Options
Hello everyone, hope your weekends haven't been too hectic!
Not sure if this is the right place to post this but I did my big xmas shop at Aldi yesterday and didn't realised until just now that the cheese board I purchased has a use by date of today! I was wondering if it would still be ok to eat and if so how long do I have? It wasn't massively expensive but we are on a tight budget this year so don't want to waste it!

Thanks in advance

Cheese doesn't magically 'go off' at midnight on the 'use by' date.
I suggest you take it out of the packaging and wrap each piece in cling film and store in the fridge. it will be absolutely fine then until Christmas and into the new year!
if it was the cheapest cheeseboard - I had that last year and had to do the same - and the cheese was lovely!

Kept in the fridge it will be fine for at least a month in my experience.

If it walks out of the fridge unassisted, then it's time to chuck it. :)

You need to eat it all before midnight otherwise it will turn into a pumpkin.
  • lol thanks guys. I didn't think that the grim reaper was coming for it at midnight but just didn't want to get ill over Christmas. Its already individually cling filmed up so hopefully will be ok. Thanks again for the advice.

    Merry Christmas x

Well, firstly, never use Aldi again, not necessarily just for this event but because it's a dump.

Hard cheese will be ok a few days after the use by date but I'd be more wary of a soft cheese beyond its' life as it may cause sickness.

Why not offer the soft cheese to member SailorSam for free?
  • Unfortunately I'm in no position to be a snob and anyway, I love Aldi. I switched from Tesco and have saved a fortune. I don't usually have any issues but it was so busy I wasn't as careful as I usually am.

I wish I had an Aldi near me but unfortunately I don't. Would shop in Aldi if I had one near me - I'm lumbered with Mr T.

Yes, the cheese will be fine for a while. I've had the same and all the cheeses lasted me a couple of weeks past their use by dates and they were fine.

Cheese sometimes gets a bit of a white coating. I think you can just cut it off and the cheese underneath it is fine.

As they say, if it looks alright, smells alright and tastes alright, it's probably alright. :)

    A top tip.

After Christmas, Sainsburys reduce their Christmas cheese range. Buy it as even though it has a ubd of 5th Jan. As the other cheeses which aren't part of the Christmas range have ubd of Feb.

Put it this way - they AGE cheese for months don't they? and the mould in cheese is actually GOOD for you! so if you don't like the 'blue' bits cut them off and the rest is fine!
