I got it diagnosed, in the end it was the motherboard that's broken. They ask me for around £130 (totalling up to £160) to repair it with no guarantee it can be repaired, so I might as well get another one

Thank you everyone for the advice

yeah, for that much, £200 for a new/refurb lappy makes more sense...

p.s. sell the old one spares/repairs on ebay, you should get a reasonable amount back to put towards another one :) Check out argos' ebay shop for some good deals...

thank you GunJack... wow can you really get anything good for £200 ? I thought good quality refub lappies started at least £300, anything less was likely a rip off (this lappy was a refurb in fact for around £320 or £330)

which model / make would you recommend for around £200 refurb?

sadly it still got all my details/personal stuff inside, I wouldn't want someone to nick them if I sell it on Ebay? is that even a risk in your opinion?

    Thank you for your help
  • Remove your hardrive and then sell it on ebay?

Oh dear, that's unfortunate. They possibly don't want to (or don't know how) to component level repair the motherboard. You could get a second opinion but that depends on how much more time you want to spend on it.

    Good luck.

^^^^ This!! and it'll serve as a handy backup hdd for you. HDDs are easy to take out, have a look for a you tube vid for your model. Do, however, leave the hdd caddy with the machine when you sell it (it's the flimsy metal cage that allows the hdd to be mounted in the lappy and are model-specific) - it'll be no further use to you any more and it'll be better for whoever buys it.

thank you, I think I'll ask for a secondo opinion, at the moment I have definitely more time than money so I can wait a bit, £130 to repair VS £250 for another laptop isn't a small difference to me now

anything I should look out for choosing a repair shop? can anyone actually guarantee they can repair it? I don't want to spend and then be back to square one

if I buy another one now, it'd have to be by installments :(

Very much the same advice as it would be for choosing a garage mechanic, are they competent and trustworthy ?

Almost anything can be repaired it's just a case of how much and is it worth it.
