Fact is, I paid the laptop around £320 18 months ago, it might be cheaper to just buy a new one0

it's never cheaper to "buy a new one" than it is to have a DC jack repaired (even in London)... depending on how difficult/easy that model is, £50-£70 should be more than suffice...
£70 is less than £200+ for a new machine, where on earth do people get the idea that repair is not worth it???......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -

Thank you for your input... Where exactly though? Because I checked 3 shops so far and they asked for £30-50£ just for labour, plus the cost of the spare parts (which they will probably overcharge for, since no offence but I think most independent repair shops can be a rip-off)
Of course I'd prefer to repair, £70 would be awesome but... where to get these prices ??0 -

The North but as you are in London then London prices it is.
The actual price of the part is cheap, you can DIY for a £5 or less if you are handy with a soldering iron and just buy the socket without the loom. However I suspect DIY electrics isn't your strong point.
Replacement tap washers are dirt cheap but a plumbers time to come out and change them isn't.
RIng around, tell them it's a DC socket replacement and get a quote.
There's a small probability it could be another component failure but a vast majority of these are just the DC socket.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -

If you've been quoted £50 for labour, that's fair enough. As FB said, cost of parts for DC jack is minimal, even if it's on a plug-in board won't be much, so there's your £50-£70 cost.

part is a fiver or less, you could buy it yourself and just get the shop to fit............Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I'm considered cheap (and in North Wales) and a lot of newer lappys are a pain to strip & rebuild, even I'd have to charge £40-50 on some of the newer models. Most older ones it can be done for £30-40 where it takes less time to strip & rebuild. The fact tht it's a plug-in rather than soldered part makes the labour cheaper.
It really depends on the laptop, but generally we're cheaper up North......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

You did discharge the PC by pressing the on button with the battery off, didnt you.0

Since I left it on a lukewarm electric blanket switched on, could it be the whole motherboard screwed up? or you guys believe it's just the DC socket as Fightbacks said?
@GunJack, thank you for the links, appreciated0
