Why do people resent buy-to-letters so much?

So why do people keep comparing supermarkets to landlords? They situation is completely incomparable.
All businesses intend to profit from people's basic needs as well as their wants. When the 'houses are different' goggles go on it gets a bit silly and emotional.
This leads to politicians jumping on the bandwagon and introducing populist measures which do nothing to deal with the root cause of the problem. That's handy for them because measures to actually deal with the housing shortage may well be unpopular with people who vote.0 -

This argument comes up again and again and I'm stumped as to why a seemingly intelligent bunch of people can't see how stupid it is.
Please come back to us when food prices start to increase by multiples of wages, when the teacher who lives next door to you takes out debt to buy up the food stock then hands it to you at higher prices. Then I will express sufficient outrage.0 -

Calling people stupid, bringing salt of the earth teachers into it and waffling about debt - that's the emotion of houses getting to you.
It's only a housing shortage so no need for the drama. It's not really a big deal in the UK - until we solve a housing shortage by building more houses people can live in houses that fulfill their basic needs if not their wants and probably not expect accommodation to get much cheaper.
The simplest way to get one over on the resented landlords is to build lots more houses. A secondary consideration is this might help ease the housing shortage. Bonus.0 -

So you agree, comparing it to supermarkets is stupid?0 -
No I don't.
However, starting a sentence with 'so you agree..' .....
Oh well, I don't have anything more to add at this time. I don't mean to call you personally stupid, but I think anybody thinking people should hate supermarkets if they hate BTL, is in fact stupid.
Because....

Well I have to say first of all that they won't be the cheapest, one year (unusually) we couldn't get them over there to do the gas safety check at a convenient time for the tenants, so although I could get one for no extra charge (included in the maintenance costs), I paid for someone else to do it and they were cheaper. Another potential problem is the time slots can be quite wide, i.e. morning or afternoon, rather than a more precise time.
But what I do actually like about them is:
-they are reliable (they'll usually turn up, so do not annoy tenants, by not doing so).
-I can trust them to do a decent job.
-the tenant can call them out.
-the tenants like the idea of a maintenance contract in place because they know things will be done (we have had tenants come to us and their previous landlord never did repairs promptly (so it is a selling point).Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -
