I'm sure BIL is going to think our gift is rubbish, and given with malicious intent. Since he's cut almost all contact with us, it's very difficult for us to figure out what he would like, or needs. I'm sure cash would go down well, but we're unwilling to do that as we know it'll just be spent on drugs.
So, we opted for a Christmas hamper from M&S instead. But he'll no doubt whinge to anyone who listens that it's lame and thoughtless etc etc. He usually does.February wins: Theatre tickets0 -
I would never turn my nose up at a charity shop gift. I regularly visit several looking for books on history/archaeology.
I've always been interested in history and my book shelves are full of charity shop bargains. Two weeks ago I got The Military Campaigns of the Wars of the Roses, looks new and unopened, for £1.49 a book on the Crusades, again looks new and unopened for £1.49 and an English Civil War book in the same condition for £2.49
If I'd paid full cover price these three books would have cost me a few pence under £70!
A couple of people will be giving me charity shop book finds for Xmas and reading them brings me more pleasure than any expensive gift that I don't really need could ever do.
I have a slightly batty aunt who used to send me a £10 book token. I asked her a few years ago to send me a £10 note explaining that I could get great books and more of them for the money from charity shops. She loved the idea. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
There are some superb ideas on here for me to get irritating people presents in future.
I have had a few over the years and a birthday was a mankini and xmas was probably a doll of sorts when I was around 10 - 11 and I was like !!!!!! do I want a doll for.0 -
My mum often used to ask me for jumble sale donations as she knew I liked to declutter regularly. One lot of donations I made included an unopened cellophane bag filled with pot pourri.
It came back to me a few weeks later on Christmas morning, beautifully wrapped, as my gift from her. :rotfl:“All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.”0 -

I received a book on how to cope with Divorce and Widowhood when I was 9. My Nana saw it in a book shop, noted the dark clothing on the front and thought it was a Brownie Annual.0
