I would tell her not to worry, if there are going to be any changes to her benefits then the DWP will notify by letter not send a message through the manager!

Unless the money being lost is something to do with rent/service charges in the sheltered accommodation. Perhaps that's why the manager is involved?

According to the friend it is disability benefits but the rent/services makes more sense if the information is coming from the manager?
  • How would s/he know about the benefits your friend receives?

I have no idea, that is just the impression I get, maybe this person hasn't told her but I get the impression someone 'in authority' has, although I might be wrong. My friend is quite vague about it.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

She just called it 'her money', she didn't specifically mention disability benefits, although she did say she wouldn't be able to afford the care that she needs.

Housing benefit for people in sheltered accommodation is not capped

    Exemptions from the cap

    housing benefit - if you are living in supported accommodation (referred to as ‘specified’ accommodation in current housing benefit legislation);

Seriously the best thing to do is to contact Age UK, they will most certainly know if any of the planned benefit changes will impact on the elderly and infirm

Thanks all for your input, I know it's so difficult to get any advice when the information I have got is so vague, but you have given me some ideas.

When I asked her what the reason was for her money reducing, she started telling me about her disability, but then went into a long ramble about some things that happened forty years ago :(. (AFAIK, this is not to do with dementia, as long as I have known her (since we were in our twenties, although we lost touch for over twenty years), she has always hearked back to the past, it used to be to her childhood, now it is forty years ago!). I really couldn't stay on the phone long enough for her to get back to the point. I'll try again next time I speak to her.

I am hoping she has got it all wrong!!

  • Thanks, she gets PC, all I know is that she says she will 'lose' £200 per week. I know also that she has to have a separate bank account for everything she spends on her care, and has to keep accounts.

It could be a personal budget from social services to pay for home carers as you have to have a separate bank account and keep accounts for this.

I did hear that Southampton are considering putting a cap on the amount that they will pay out each week.

Hollyharvey, that sounds similar to what I understand her setup to be. She is not in Southampton, but if they have implemented this cap maybe other authorities also have.

This sort of thing sounds like what she gets:

From the amount you mention I'd expect it to be Direct Payments, Personal Budget or the like. It's a limited pot and sometimes those most in need lose out to those that shout loudest. Does she have a social worker, could you speak directly to them or the scheme manager?

As I said above, could it be due to the Benefits cap?

the separate bank avvount sounds like direct payments from the local authority.

it sounds like her benefits aren't affected, but the amount of are support her council are providing has dropped.

this is a matter for social services and not directly to do with benefit entitlement
