Can I get income support?

Hi, I just wonder if I could I get income support? I live with my disabled mother and she get the high rate disability living allowance . I try getting the care living allowance but she not on the care component for that. She also gets a pension because she is over 60.

I want to sign off so I can care for her full time. I have to make sure she is washed a dressed and cook her meals for her everyday. She has mental heath issues too, which make it difficult for others to handle her sometimes.

you can only claim income support if you receive carers allowance, and you can only get carers allowance if your mum gets middle or high rate care DLA.

if her care needs are so great you should ask for her claim to be looked at again

perhaps you were refused carers allowance because you earn over £110 per week?
If you stop working and claim CA then you should get income support AFAIK

I wasn't working or on jsa at the time when I applied for carers allowance. I was refused carers allowance because shes hasn't got the care component but she is on higher rate disability. She also over 64 and born before 1948 so that why she not on pip.

Just want to know if I can get income support if she not on the care component but is on the higher rate disability living allowance?

The first response to your question answered this question. Your mother needs to be on the care component for you to get carers allowance and income support.

The advice given was to get the claim looked at again. If there is now a requirement for care she can get the care component.

No, she would have to be receiving mid/high rate of the DLA care component for you to claim carers allowance which in turn may of led to income support.

It would seem that your mother is receiving higher rate MOBILITY compontent of DLA only, and that will not enable you to claim Carers Allowance. She needs to be receiving either Middle or Higher rate CARE component, or Daily Living component of PIP. The other benefit she could be on, for you to have the possibility of claiming CA, is Attendance Allowance but I don't know the rules around that.

The rules for changing a DLA award at your mum's age are complex.

As already said it seems that your mum now has care needs and needs some kind of assessment.

I suggest that you get in contact with AgeUK and ask for some advice.

If your mum gets AA you will get carers' allowance and qualify for IS.

Surely if she is retired she shouldn't be on DLA,.
