there is another reason for it too ,put only seen this one using the first edition of xp and early xp sp1 editions ,you have to load the IDE/raid driver, by pressing F6 when it ask you about them (in the first few screens) and they have to be on a floppy disk
sorry about been vaig put not see it for a long time or had to do it

From memory you have to do this for the SATA raid driver, not IDE. As the OP is only using IDE drives it shouldn't be an issue.

  • You don't - the F6 is only for SATA/SCSI devices.

  • The fact that you can boot into safe mode suggests that your file system is not damaged. Have you looked at the cable and bios suggestions here:

ive looked at that page several times now. i will have a look at the leads and reseat them and see if that makes any diffrence.

the strange thing is that i have used the same components/bios settings for about 2-3years without any problem.

CHKDSK has just finished and said it found one or more errors on the volume. i rebooted it but it didnt work like it did last time.

EDIT: i'm wondering if i should run seatools and see if the drive is failing
  • Longshot, but try clearing the CMOS for your bios (google for it).

When did you last use the XP Pro CD?

Maybe there is something wrong with it, I know what I would do download a new version with most MS updates included and use your legit key to install.

Maybe the CD if old does not have the correct driver for your hardware.
  • the hardware is a couple of years old (amd athlon 3200, gigabyte ga-7n400-L, creative soundblaster audigy 2 platinum ex). the funny thing is that i did a test install on a computer from around 2001 (mine was built around 2003-ish) and it worked fine (i now have ubuntu on that machine).

i did get one error message about it not being able to save a file to a user profile during the installation

Very odd that something like that allowed it to boot to safe mode but not normal mode but well done on getting it sorted.
