Unmountable boot volume in XP pro

Options
after i had the problem with services.exe taking 99% of the cpu, the computer was so slow that i decided to reformat it. now i get the "unmountable boot volume" blue screen error at startup.

i reinstalled windows xp pro to see if that would help, but it didnt. it still comes up with the error message for about a second after the xp splash screen which meant i couldnt finish the installation. i ran chkdsk \r from the recovery console and that allowed me to complete the installation, but it still wont boot into windows.

the wierd thing is that it boots to safe mode fine (and i can use it in safe mode), but will not boot to windows (running in the normal mode) without the blue screen stop error

  • Go back into the recovery console and use either fixboot or fixmbr

Remove all hardware apart from essentials.

And try a new reformat install.

Then add each part back one at a time, my thinking is you have some sort of conflict.

i'll try removing the pci sound card thats in it (the only bit of non essential h/w) tonight and see if that helps.

    thanks for that BritBrat! :)

If thats all, I would not bother.

I don't think one sound card is going to make a conflict.

I meant leave one hard drive, Graphics card, memory, keyboard and mouse.

Do you know what caused the problem in the first place, i.e. what were you doing at the time?

thats all i have in it (inc. the sound card). i only have a usb keyboard if that makes any difference..

i had reinstalled windows xp pro sp2 from scratch (after services.exe was taking 99% of the cpu under xp sp2 MCE 2005). it got to the bit where you reboot after it finished copying all the files from the disk, and wouldnt reboot into windows (it will boot to safe mode though).

i had to use the recovery console to run chkdsk \r at which point it was successful and i rebooted it and it let me finish the installation. after it completed the installation it rebooted and wouldnt let me into windows.

im wondering if it will work if i put MCE back on it.

chkdsk /r has worked for me before, it may be worth another try.
