Immersion Heater Help

Options
Can someone help as I am a little confused?

We have solar PV panels that heat our hot water in the summer via a Solar iboost and this works well. However, we have now come to the colder months and are using our Stove to heat water with a boost of the immersion heater for 1hr in the morning (between 6am and 7am) to boost temp for showers.

The issue is this, the immersion is 3kW and we are on a rate of about 14p, therefore I would assume that we would be using approx. 45p per for this hour (14p per kWh x 3kW). But our new smart meter that Eon have kindly fitted is showing that we are using about 83p......can anyone shed any light on what may be happening here....???

    Welcome to the forum.

What do you mean by 'stove' to heat water?

If you have a 3kW immersion heater in a hot water tank, that will use electricity at a rate of 42p an hour while it is heating. However what other electrical appliances/lights etc do you have on at 6am in the morning? It would need to be a heavy consumption item such as a tumble dryer/cooker etc.

As you have solar panels you presumably live in a house and not a flat. What fuel do you have for central heating?

Hi DarrenL124 and welcome to the Forums.

As Cardew says, your 3kW water immersion heater will cost 42p per hour whilst it's heating. Your Smart Energy Display, though, will show how much all the energy being used at the property is costing. If you've gas as well, you'll need to use the buttons on the display to go between the fuels.

By using the display buttons, you can see information at the time they're pressed, overall for the day, for the week, the month and the year so far. Information for 'now' is for the electric only. This isn't available for gas because the gas meter updates the display every half hour. The electric updates the display every 5 seconds.

Hope this helps Darren. There's more information about the display on our website. Might help too.
