Builders haven't laid dust sheets. Who should clean up?

My landlord is carrying out work using private builders not from a company. They haven't laid down any dust sheets and I've got home to see stuff in the kitchen and bedroom
Covered in dust. It's a one bedroom flat so there isn't any more space to store stuff away. Dust sheets over the fridge and worktop would have prevented any issues.
Who should clean up? The builders or landlord have someone come round to clean?
Thanks a lot

What is "a private builder" and "not from a company"?Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

The operatives should have done the right thing and put down proper protection and cleaned up after themselves but realistically you may as well do it yourself.
Let the Landlord know though in the hope that they are more considerate next time, it may also help them prevent damages claims for the scratched appliances, ruined carpets or whatever other damage they could cause by not properly sheeting up.0 -
Depends on the work thye carried out but at the very least they should put dustsheets down on the floors and the bed. Some work is dusty and theres no getting away from that, impossible to leave a house sparkling clean and I wouldn't want workmen moving my ornaments to wipe the dust off the mantle piece I would rather do it..
At the very least dust sheets on the floor and wipe down worktops in the kitchen. I always take a hoover and hoover up. My grandad always said always leave a house as clean as when you arrived.0 -
I recently had a new fireplace installed. I covered everything before the workmen arrived. They then placed their own dust sheets over mine. I am uber careful but I think GOOD workmen always clean up after themselves.
When the job was complete, they had their own Henry which they used to vacuum round where they had been working.0 -
Thank you all for your responses. Have emailed landlord only to receive this response.
"""I told you I would not take responsibility for any damage or dust to your property, read back on previous emails. You have decided to make this as difficult as possibles it's a massive job and if you thought there would be no dust you're in more cuckoo land than I thought.
I would advise you to protect your property. """"
If you go through a building company then surely a building company is liable
If you hire a private self employed individual hired by the landlord the surely the landlord is responsible for damaged goods.0 -

The status of the workman coming into your home is trrelevant. Decent tradesmen will shhet up and then clean up after.
The landlord has had the job done on the cheap. Don't expect him to pay anything!Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -

Well that attitude only confirms my initial thoughts. Dodgy Landlord paying peanuts and getting monkeys. It probably isn't worth getting into an argument with the Landlord as he clearly doesn't give a damn. If there had been any damage then your claim would have been against the Landlord as he employed the operatives to carry out work he responsible for and with his attitude one day he will be subject to a claim. The same would apply if he had employed a building firm as the contractual relationship is between Landlord and builder.
Yes, when you do building work there will be dust and even if dust sheets had been used it is unrealistic to expect your home to be spotlessly clean afterwards and yes you should take effort to protect what you can but there are certain standards that people should work to, protection and a clean up is not an unreasonable expectation.
If you didn't already know that your Landlord didn't care about you, at least you know now.0 -

I don't care what he says he will be liable for any damage to your belongings/property..
Typical LL I'm afraid........... 1% of LL are good people and do right by their tenants..99% are complete @rseholes.......
The stupid thing is work to a tenanted property can be offset against tax... He can claim the cost back against his tax liability.. Never understood why LL either never have the work done or do it on the cheap..0 -
Dust still can penetrate dust sheetsWith love, POSR0
