You're not wrong. Muggins here thought he was being helpful by letting them know they needed to send a recovery truck, rather than a man in a van, thus saving time. Mentioned the word "garage" and they left me to rot claiming terms and conditions.

(I looked at these terms and conditions and noted they only preclude actual work being carried out on a car, which didn't happen in my case the mechanic simply diagnosed it).
But if the problem was diagnosed and work not carried out then you might understand why they wouldn't treat it as a breakdown.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

That's fair enough, but that scenario isn't/wasn't mentioned in their T&C's.

What they precluded was me taking it to the garage, him having a go a fixing it, not managing it then me asking RAC to make good his repairs.

    Still, lesson learned.

ADAC. £70ish for entire continent personal cover for two.

Have you joined or renewed recently? I ask as the page at
    https://www.adac.de/mitgliedschaft/adac_membership/

states:- 'Using the links below to acquire ADAC membership requires that your place of residence is in Germany.'

I couldn't see any other joining page.

No, you need to phone them. The only German you need is "Sprechen sie Englisch?" - the typical response is either "Of course, how can I help?" or "No, but please hold and I vill transfer you to my colleague who does."...

The reason for that is that the ADAC application page cannot recognize and process UK postcodes - or any non-German postcodes come to that. So even the German speakers in Austria have to phone up too.

The ADAC is the largest car club in Europe and is ran for the benefit of the members - not the share-holders as the RAC and AA are.

But Adrian has given you all the info and all the German you need to say when you phone. ;)

What's really amusing is that when you phone up, and ask them to call you back - they will, gladly.

But it might not be a German number. They off-shore at least some of their call centres...

    To Croatia...
