It's most likely a paypal problem their end. It could well have been that Paypal refunded your money and not them.

Paypal are a difficult company and fraud alerts may have triggered the suspension of their account so payment by Paypal may be off the table for them.

It's nothing whatsoever to do with Paypal making a mistake. The OP stated that the company themselves processed the refund as they that the goods had not been received.

On checking my emails it seems the company incorrectly thought I'd not collected the order and they refunded me. However a further email states they've realised their mistake

Do you have a cheque book? Ask them for their paypal e-mail and SEND the money via Paypal. If they don't accept it, there problem. They should be bending over backwards to fix the problem THEY caused.

Ukash voucher? Amazon vouchers? Sending it PayPal as a gift (if you have the goods/service already)? Bank transfer? Cash payment into their bank account? Lots of ways they could receive payment if they wanted it!
  • If the op paid by PayPal, they received the protection and benefits PayPal offers buyers.

Sending the payment again by any other method means the op loses this protection.

This sounds very dodgy and personally I would report it to PayPal as it sounds like a scam. I have always found PayPal to be extremely helpful and very appreciate of reports of this nature.

As the OP already has the goods and has made no mention of them being not as described, what Paypal protection do you think they will be losing by repaying by another method?

This is not a scam company - it's Argos.

I know because I was one of the ones who also purchased an item via fast track and received a refund in error (exactly same circumstances - paid via PayPal)

I did wonder what would happen if I wanted to pay again via Paypal but just paid it by debit card in the end. I can't see how they can force you to pay by a method other than your chosen one though - they're going to get laughed out of court if they refuse cash and then try to take legal action. I'd just tell them you're happy to go in and pay cash, or pay paypal - if they can't accommodate those, it's up to them to deal with.

edit to add: definitely a technical problem with Argos - I received two emails, one from Argos saying that I hasn't collected and they would process a refund, a second from Paypal a few minutes later confirming the refund.

Why didn't the op just say it was Argos in the first place!
If the reason they don't want you to pay with PayPal is because there's a technical problem that's understandable isn't it?
