Refunded in error. Now demanding I pay alternative method.

I placed an order online for local collection and paid via PayPal. Today I was doing my banking and noticed that I had a credit for the same amount as the order. On checking my emails it seems the company incorrectly thought I'd not collected the order and they refunded me. However a further email states they've realised their mistake and want paying but they can't debit a PayPal account and want me to pay by credit or debit card and I needed to call them to do this.

I called them and explained that whilst I was of course happy to pay, it can only be via PayPal as I do not own a credit cArd and I do not give out the details of my debit card either online or over the phone (bad past experience). They got all uppity insisting I have to pay on my debit card and insinuating I am a theif when I repeated that I will not use this payment method. I'm happy to pay by PayPal or go and pay in cash at local store so am not a theif! I said look I chose a method of payment on your website which suited me. I would not have ordered if i had to pay by debit card. You made a mistake and refunded the payment now you are taking my right to choose the method of payment out of my hands.

Do they have the right to dictate that I hand over my debit card information? What happens if I still refuse to? Bear in mind I am not refusing payment. Just the method.

  • No. Why can't he just invoice you on PayPal? Anyone can do that.
  • The company sound like a bunch of amateurs.

Sounds like a dodgy company to me. Someone is trying to get you card details, Paypal is perfect for refunding them with. If they seriously dont want to be refunded via paypal, its their loss NOT YOURS!. ;)

Makes you wonder how many other people they've "accidentally" refunded.
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

Email them you'll pay by PayPal again or bank transfer so you have proof

Sounds just like scam tactics to me.

Stick to your guns, there's absolutely no reason whatsoever why they can't accept a payment unless they've been naughty and had their paypal account suspended - means you should be even more worried.

You could always try the... if paypal isn't sufficient, they're more than welcome to arrange a courier to collect said item at a time convenient to you.
  • I think this is more likely a combination of incompetence and !!!!-up than any type of scam. Yes you owe them the money but they cant force you to pay by an the methods they are asking you to.

Email them saying you want to pay as per the original order, but if that is not possible please provide their bank details so you can send them the money by bank transfer.

It's known that paypal is a method that is only suitable for delivery as the only proof they will accept for non delivery is a tracking number which you obviously can't provide as you've collected.
It looks as though they are doubly inefficient anyway as they've accidentally refunded you when you've got the goods.
Give them two options- pay with cash or no payment.
Personally I'd make them collect it and buy it elsewhere and they review them online.

In practice you may need to ask to speak to the manager who may have a different take on it.

Who are the company, others may have had the same 'issue', and will be more likely to see if it is a scam or a genuine mistake.

It's most likely a paypal problem their end. It could well have been that Paypal refunded your money and not them.

Paypal are a difficult company and fraud alerts may have triggered the suspension of their account so payment by Paypal may be off the table for them.

You could ask for their account details and just do a bank transfer.
