Minimum payment taken despite £0 balance!!!

Options
Last Wednesday, I payed my Egg CC bill in full, and according to EMM the money cleared into their account on the 24th, and the balance was £0.
Today I log into my current account to find that Egg have taken what would have been the minimum payment (£53.43) despite the fact that my balance says £0. I'm so  because I don't want a credit balance onmy card!
I sent them a secure message asking for them to return the money, what do u think my chances are?

You have to make any manual payment at least 5 working days before the payment due date to stop the DD being called...

If you don't want to simply spend the in-credit amount, they should transfer it back to your current account. You won't be able to do this yourself (via the move money feature) because the minimum BT is £100.

Hi Sarah, you should be able to request a cheque or refund from them as soon as they register the amount as an overpayment. It happened to me on the M&S Money card but they said that it takes them ten days for a payment to filter into the statement production process. So I couldn't close the card even though there was nothing on the balance until I had the next statement showing zero balance, the woman said it doesn't show up on her screen until it is part of your statement history. If it is causing you hardship, you could try asking them to refund you immediately, they have always been helpful when we've contacted them ( we have the ordinary Egg card). Hope this helps, Jandy

That'll be why then! If only I'd been a bit quicker (or read the T's and C's properly!) I don't have a current acc with Egg, so I'll just have to spend it (onlie, cuz the card got the chop!)

    Thanks Yorkshire Boy!

This has happened to me when I've forgot to deduct the minimum payment amount from the total amount owing when making a payment.
In my case its been a small amount but annoying non the less.
Can't say what eggs attitude to this would be, good luck with their CS.

    Hi Sarah
Have you actually asked Egg to refund the overpayment?

This happened to me when I paid my Mint card in full (just before the end of the 0% interest period).

Mint then took the minimum payment, putting me £38.00 in credit.
As I'd cut up the card and didn't intend using it again, I rang them and asked them to credit the overpayment.
They sent me a cheque for £38.00 within a couple of weeks.

Yes, I sent them a secure message this morning. If I don't get any joy, I'll give them a call

It's safer however to assume that the minimum payment won't be taken - and to make your manual payment on that basis - if you are intending to 'clear' the balance to avoid incurring any interest. Suppose you owe the £1000 and the min payment is £20? If you only pay £980 and it hits the account five working days before the DD is due what is going to happen? It's a toss up. I've also had payments made at least 5WD up front and Egg has still not adjusted the DD collection figure. For the sake of 2 percent extra it isn't worth risking.

It is also worth mentioning that if this were an Egg Money CC Sarah could draw £50 of the overpayment today at any free ATM for no charge - it has to be a multiple of £10 of course. And if doing that make sure the card is left unused for purchases until the following day to allow for the withdrawal to come first on the statement.

I use my Egg card on a daily basis. I pay the statement balance in full every month as well as having a direct debit setup for a fixed amount. Ill definitely use more than that fixed amount and that is there in case I forget to pay in time or something like that.

But with Egg you need to sort out everything yourself well in time, or their standing payments will go through. Being a credit card which actually allows you to be in credit without hassle and pays interest on it, they treat these payments slightly different to other card companies who do not want you in credit at all.

I think the card ur talking about is the Egg Money card, as I don't earn interest on a credit balance, but thanks for posting - I may well get an Egg money card, they seem like quite a good idea!

Milarky - agree totally, would rather have the hassle of having to chase my money or use the CC to get it back, rather than pay 17.9% int on the balance, which was over £2k. I've just come to the end of the 0% period, so would have been well
