There's absolutely no way even the garage would have paid that for 20Litres of oil! They probably bought it as 20l but probably two or three times that.

The price seems a little high, but nothing out of the ordinary for a lot of garages.

Where is this 5L for less than £12...? Even Tescos mineral rubbish would be more than this

Here is the link, VAT isn't included (it wasn't on the 35.21 either)

  • If you'd like some recommendations for local trustworthy places which won't rip you off, drop me a PM. I've got only a few I would trust for work on my cars if I can't be bothered to DIY.

Thanks, online they are selling 5 litres of this oil by this make for £11.99 which made me question it further.

I doubt you will get any oil that meets the Ford spec for £11.99.

You need 5w30 to a specific Ford spec which is usually Fully Synthetic.

Even the semi synth you get from Ford dealers is the around the £25 mark.

You are of course allowed to service your car yourself.

    TradeTec??

I wouldn't put that in any car I owned. Could easily be that recycled rubbish you used to get at Motor Factors for £5.99 a gallon back in the early 90's.

But for future reference you can get an oil and filter change for next to nothing at Kwik Fit.

I used them a few times years ago when I lived in a flat. At the time they had been bought by Ford so the oil was the same as you got at a Ford dealer.

If the garage has used exactly the same oil then they have only ripped you off if they have charged more than the RRP for the oil.

As an example would you feel ripped off if you paid more than the Costco price for a can of Pepsi or a Mars bar?

A garage is in essence a retailer of that oil. They don't have to charge you what they paid for it, and to be honest why should they.

Halfords sell their own branded fully synthetic for £10 every few months, they do a Ford specific and a Vauxhall specific.

Used to be made by Comma, don't know now.

I always supply my own oil for a service. That way it costs me £40 and not £120+

So about £100 in total for the service? Doesn't sound unreasonable. Look at the total price for the service not the itemised bits. Does it matter if they were to charge £50 for the oil but change it and supply a filter for free, for instance?
  • Thanks everyone for your advice, I'm not going to contact them about it. It was more that the figures were bugging me, cos I'm on here I like to have everything itemised! Lol

  • The cheapest mechanics near me charges around £6.50 per litre for oil as part of a service, so I would say your price is reasonable.
