First service is £35.21 for oil normal?

Hi I hope you can give me some advice, I took my 2004 Ford Focus in for its first MOT and service since I have had it today and when I got home noticed I was charged £35.21 for 20l oil (exact info says TT212D20L 5w-30 semi syn premium 20l) and this seems excessive to me, 20l is a hell of a lot, I have checked the car and they haven't left what remains. They are closed now but it's puzzling me so thought I would ask here if this is normal or am I being ripped off. I don't mind paying for the oil they use one my car but if they have only used 5 litres then are using the rest on other cars it seems dishonest.

My dad used to deal with all my car stuff but since he passed away I'm doing it myself and don't want them to think cos I'm a woman they can take advantage but also don't want to accuse them if there is a explanation.

Thanks for reading

Price is ok but it will be around 5L of oil not 20L.
    That's half the petrol tank.

It's fine nothing to worry about.
  • Thanks, online they are selling 5 litres of this oil by this make for £11.99 which made me question it further.

But you are not buying it online the garage are supplying it at full rrp.
  • Ok thanks, it's just with the reciept specifying 20l that confused me. The online price was at a garage so thought it would be similar

If you type TT212D20L into google, it is the code for a 20L pack, which no doubt retails at £35.21 (and the garage get it much cheaper).

Someone has had finger trouble typing the codes on the invoice, they no doubt meant to charge £35.21 for about 4 litres*.

I'd give them a ring tomorrow and query it, you might embarrass them into a reduction.

*This is why you either do it yourself, and save £££££££££ or take it to ATS who use actual premium oil (Shell Helix Ultra), rather than an oil named premium for the £50 oil & filter change. (You won't get that under £22 for 5litres, plus a filter, $50 isn't bad)

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
  • I recently paid £48.99 for an Oil and Oil Filter Service so you did just fine it seems.
  • It is customary for a garage to charge you the price per litre of the smallest container at full RRP - even though they are actually lifting it out of a two and a half thousand litre oil tank...

There's absolutely no way even the garage would have paid that for 20Litres of oil! They probably bought it as 20l but probably two or three times that.

The price seems a little high, but nothing out of the ordinary for a lot of garages.

Where is this 5L for less than £12...? Even Tescos mineral rubbish would be more than this

I paid for the £40 for the MOT and another £40 for the service on top of the oil cost.
