To mention St Albans for a house with a budget of 400k is crazy! I think Gravesend is a good shout along with Purley and parts of Croydon. Other areas like Romford or Hayes might get you something and both have crossrail coming in 2017.
Around Bromley for that budget is impossible, 2 bed flats are about 350k so for a 3 bed house close to the station your looking at 450-500k+.0 -
Thanks for all the replies, I am happy to consider North as well, sorry for not clarifying.
Unfortunately yes, I would prefer to stay where we are but despite reporting the noise to the council for over a year and escalating it via our local councillor nothing has been resolved. They have given her another flat but she has not moved. I don't know what else I can do, its really affecting my relationship and work now. I love the flat, love the location, hate the noise.
Commute time ideally under an hour. I get the bus currently and it can take an hour to go 3.5 miles! Hitchen sounds interesting. Cambridge and St Albans I've heard are very nice. Bedford and Milton Keynes I'm slightly less keen on. Mixed feelings about Croydon, I know someone in Carshalton who loves it but to me it definitely feels like the suburbs and slightly worse of both worlds.0 -
We commute from Welwyn North - 17min fast train - only at peak times, 34ish on slow train. We drive to the station (no traffic but £1000 a year to park).
Knebworth, welwyn garden city, stevenage on the same line.
Luton on the St Albans line0 -
St Albans is very nice but also very expensive. Not too bad though if you're happy with a terrace a reasonable distance from the train station.0

Borehamwood puts you in zone 6 of transport for London, 400k may get you a 3 bed semi in walking distance of the station.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Northfleet (Ebbsfleet) or Gravesend are now within easy commuting time to St Pancras and Charing Cross on the old line.0

I'm in Mitcham, SW London. Zone 3 and will get you to St Pancras in around 35 mins. Not the best of areas at the moment, although certainly not the worst, however prices have been going crazily upwards the last year or so but might still fit your budget, though not for much longer I think0

A bit further out, but Reading has some really good houses for that price and you can get to Paddington in 25 minutes, St Pancras in about 45 mins on a good day. A very reliable service that goes every 5-10 minutes at peak time.0

not any more!! I looked at Borehamwood and loved the area along with Rickmansworth but 400k will barely get you a 2 bed flat if near the station. A taylor wimpey new build about 1mile from station going for 360k-400K0 -

You can get 2/3 beds for sub £400K, but it would seem no detached at this price any more.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0
