Confused. Circumstance change. Tax credits.

I have in total 5 children. In the summer two of them went to live with their dad. Now, my eldest has followed suit. I informed tax credits promptly both times. Since the summer, when I had three children at home, when I had the revised award my payments were £20 a week under what 'turn 2 us' said they would be, and there was a thing on the form saying 'we may have paid you too much money'. Now I've called and taken eldest off (leaving the 2 still at home on the claim) and I asked them about the reduced amount and what it was for... Apparently it's because my tax credits were higher earlier in the year and its a tax year thing? Now I know my payments should drop to £117/wk and obviously the yearly amount will be less again so how much are they going to underpay now? I'm just having to wait and see if they pay anything at all into my bank next week...
I'm so confused. I don't see what this is for. The other 3's dad will be getting tax credits for them now, as he's entitled, why does that mean I need reduced payments? I didn't overclaim, The children lived here then, they don't now. I'm only after the same payments I'd get for the 2 children in my house if it was a new claim. I didn't expect my whole family to implode this year why are hmrc punishing me for it?:eek:

Your TC are worked out on a yearly basis for your circumstances at that time, so now another child has left your no longer entitled to money for them. Obviously your TC and child benefits are reduced, if they left it at the current rate you would have an overpayment next year which would reduce next year's finalised award twice, for overpayment and one less child....0 -

I don't want the money for the extra child. Where did I say that??
I would like to know how much they'll knock off the £117 that entitled to says we SHOULD be recieving from now, as since August we were getting 150 instead of the 170 our payments SHOULD have been.
And what any of this has to do with the tax year. Is food and electric going to be cheaper because I had more children in the spring? No. So why all the reductions?Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession

How long did it take for the claim to update when you told them? What happened at renewal, did your tax credits change then? Tax credits work on an annual basis, not a weekly basis, so if for any reason you were paid too much earlier in the year, that'll reduce your weekly payment now. You need to check your award over the entire tax year, and check they've used the correct dates for the circumstances changes.0

The award notice I had didn't give dates, just my new payments until april at £20 a week under what they should have been. the woman I spoke to Said there wasn't an overpayment being recovered or anything and it was to do with the tax year.
The first change wasnt long after I did my renewal. Obviously I've not had my new award notice this time yet or I wouldn't be stressing about it and having to wait and see what (if anything) we get paid next week.Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession

No one can tell you what your amended award will state. Try to put it out of your mind until you receive it, or payment if that comes through first. Surely a better idea than snapping at those trying to help you?0

the only time I snapped was when someone suggested I wanted to keep an extra child on the award. Which I don't.
Sorry I'll try to pretend that wondering whether we can put electric on next week is completely normal. Gas is already a no no we are all sat here in coats because I'm trying to eke out what little money we have in case we get nothing next week. But wouldn't want to be snappy.Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession

I never suggested anything of the sort.
To be honest your op needs reading a few times before it becomes clear what you are ranting over...I just answered trying to be helpful.0 -

im not patroniing ... just giving an option.
you have a chaotic lifestyle, but rather than accepting that it will take the system time to work it out, you blame them for the choices you and your family are making ...
and then you insult the people that have tried to help
no pleasing some people0
