Ex bankrupt mortgage

Hi guys.

I declared bankruptcy back in August 2009 with discharge following a year later.
It has been over 7 years now and my files are all clean etc etc.
Have held a few CC's since taking advantage of 0% balance transfers and even have a small loan through my bank with no missed payments whatsoever....anyway I am now considering a mortgage in the no too distant future and would like to know who are ex BR friendly.

I currently bank with Barclays but don't know if they consider ex BR'S. Can anyone suggest a bank or building society that definitely do consider people in my situation as I would like to switch to them now un order to build up a good internal score with them to boost my chances further still.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.....

    Hi mug098

I posted the exact same question on the "mortgages" forum. Please have a look. :)

OK the first piece of advice is do you research!!

The intermediary sites can tell you a lot more information than you'd expect. For example Halifax say this about the Bankruptcy question "The Bankruptcy question should be answered as yes if you have had a bankruptcy/IVA or Debt Relief Order within the last 6 years OR still have an outstanding Bankruptcy Restriction Order."

As you are outside this time frame you can legitimately answer no, giving you access to a fairly decent rate, which you can then build on.

Never underestimate the advantages of a good broker though..

FYI your solicitor will talk about a 'Bankruptcy Search', don't panic this is a K16 Land registry search on which entries only last 5 years. So if you can answer yes to the Halifax question, this will be all clear too.

Hope this Helps, and good luck with your search.

  • That's fantastic info 2K. Really appreciate that! :)

As with going through the bankruptcy all them years ago, I did my research and took in as much info as possible which armed me for what was to come.
I got all the help I needed on this very forum and, when the time comes to apply, I'm sure I will jump on here to glean even more info.

    Once again, thank-you...

I was declared BR in 2008 and got a mortgage earlier this year with Nationwide at a very good rate.

The BR slowed things down a bit but other than supplying a brief explanation of the reasons behind my BR and bank statements/pay slips going back further than the usual 3 months(they wanted a full year) I had no problems.

That is extremely encouraging info Andy.

I presume you had a substantial deposit to put down to negate the BR??

BR in 2009 and just got a Mortgage with the Halifax. Followed the "clean up your file" thread and paid all CC off in full every month and was squeaky clean for 6 years.

I had the advantage of "right to buy" so no deposit needed. I told the advisor about the BR but caused me no problems at all

    Good luck
