phones and Wifi question.

Hi
Hope this isn't a stooopid question!

Been hankering after N95 for a bit, contract up soon etc. Would like internet acess (just "cos" so it shouldn't be expensive).

I keep looking at the 3 deals with add on net access at £5/month....but the orange dolphin £35 deal from P4U looks better as only 12/12 contract.

I have Wifi at home so presumably I can go onto the network for free using Wi fi feature on the phone?? Will this also be free in a "wifi hotspot" eg starbucks?? If so I'm not sure what the extra charge via 3 will give me over and above this for general use, for holidays etc can I pay a one off "pay and go internet" thing on orange? I guess abroad you pay roaming data at greatly added costs any way (though a hotspot will still be free, will it????? Gosh skype etc would stop all those expensive calls home on holiday if this is the case..)

Your input will be valued guys and gals!
Ta

as the wifi is a feature of the phone, the network will not charge you for its use
  • Hi, sorry to hijack the thread but i also am looking forward to getting this phone as it has gps however i heard a rumour that the networks charge for using this built in feature! is this true and is there any way of using it as a stand alone sat nav?

The GPS will get charged for in terms of data usage (i.e. how the map info gets onto your phone) and/or the Nokia subscription you have to take out to use it (i.e. Nokia letting you access the map info).

Wifi will be free if it's your own wifi service (like in your home). Hotspots and many hotels charge for access to their wifi services (normally buy a scratchcard or enter credit card details). Not sure if any of the networks have a deal where you can use their hotspot too (e.g. T-mobile).

You may find that some networks have disabled or hidden the phone's facility for internet calls. Vodafone and Orange were criticised a while back for doing this, and I haven't checked up on it more recently

Only if you're doing through their data link. Though they may remove any built-in VOIP client there is no reason AFAIK you couldn't install your own client and use it through whatever wifi you've managed to get your mits on.
