O/S Daily Friday 11th December 2015

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine.

Morning everyone

I seem to have joined the insomniacs (sp?) club! Went to bed too early, and slept quite well, but then woke too early and can’t go back to sleep.

Birthday wishes to those celebrating a birthday, hope you have a great day x

Hugs and get well wishes to those that want/need them.

DH up and gone to work. DS1 taking some annual leave, so still in his pit. DS2 still in his pit, will wake him in a bit.

Still dark, damp and has turned colder.

Dinner last night was lamb – it was lamb shoulder joints, cook from frozen, the flavour was lovely just not very big and didn’t have much meat on. I served mash, cauli, broc, carrots and gravy with it. Choc birthday cake for dessert. Tonight will be something and chips, easy dinner. DS1 is going out, so I’ll take him to his friends where they are meeting up.

I wasn’t particularly productive yesterday. I went to the shopping outlet, arrived and the shops weren’t opening for another half an hour, so finished up in Costapacket with a coffee, the shops are all in a pedestrian precinct but its outside, so with the blustery wind it wasn’t pleasant enough to wander around until the shops opened. I really struggled to find anything and was tempted just to come home, then remembered I’d been given a voucher for the sports shop that has a branch there, went in and asked if I could use it at that store and bought DS1 a couple of new t-shirts, which cost a grand total of £1 after I’d used the voucher. I seemed to then find some shopping mojo, and visited the perfume shop – spent quite a bit in there, nice smellies for both the boys and a perfume gift set with some freebies that was a real bargain for myself. DH doesn’t buy me anything, as he’s too lazy and can’t be bothered, (he says just to buy what I want throughout the year). I do bother and find it very hurtful that he isn’t bothered to go out and buy me a gift. So I choose and buy gifts for myself which get wrapped up and put under the tree – I’m a naturally very generous person, so make sure I’m generous to myself just once a year at xmas. Although I think he’s had a bit of a shock as on his birthday he asked what special dinner was I going to cook for him, and he was being a real grumpy git, and not very pleasant to be around, so before I could stop myself, I just said “the same as you do for my birthday, sweet f*** all”, the look on his face was priceless. I do buy him some gifts, and have always done so, I want the boys to see that sometimes you have to rise above other people’s actions and attitudes. His family are not very giving or generous either, so I know where it comes from, and it’s not because they are financially unable to do it, his mother particularly is very money obsessed, she see’s pound signs in front of her eyes. Money is the reason she hasn’t had anything to do with her 90 year old father for the past nearly 3 years – he hasn’t done anything wrong, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s re-written his will and she’s been excluded, not looking forward to that if he has as she’ll cause a riot.

This morning I’ll be heading to the SM for 8am, then I’m going to visit my bestie with the xmas gifts for her family. Will be good to catch up as haven’t seen her for ages. We had started meeting up every so often on a Friday lunchtime, as she was child free, but now her youngest has started nursery, she isn’t free on Friday’s anymore at lunchtimes, so I’ll just visit today between school/nursery runs.

Keep safe and well x

  • Morning everyone, thank you for the thread nmlc.
Another patchy night, have been awake since 2 and up since 3, will have a slow day today and perhaps a catch up sleep.
Washing in the machine, weather report says fine, have been wondering if cold leftover garlic bread would be nice but think I may stick with the more conventional toast and marmite.
I really am tired, must get a grip.
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back
  • Morning fellow insomniacs and all else to follow. My inbuilt alarm went off at 4.00, as usual, and by 5.00 I couldn't stand tossing 'n turning any longer. And, flipping heck, it feels much chiller this morning too.

Must get my industrious head on this morning as I need to give the whole house a good blitz before the decs can go up tomorrow. (They are still languishing in the loft but that's another matter and my new tree is still in it's box!)

We came home with a mountain of food/drink shopping yesterday. All that could be bought in advance has been. So hopefully just fruit, veg and dairy to buy in the two weeks up to Christmas (and for many weeks after it too judging by the stuff crammed in the cupboards and freezers!) I can't do with the scrums involved in last minute shopping and my time is too precious to stand in a long sm queue behind dozens of people with trolleys piled up like Mt Vesuvius!

I need to get as organised as I can with jobs this weekend as four days next week are spoken for with medical appointments for the two of us. Plus DD is on two early shifts so the DGDs will be here for tea, sleepovers and school runs too. Busy week in store. Then the week after it will be school holidays - eeek!!

Lunch will have to be something quick 'n easy in amongst cleaning but I have some gammon steaks in the fridge for this evening. (The last of the ones cut by 50% in Aldi for no apparent reason a while back!)

Have a good day all ((((((HUGS))))) to those wanting/needing them. Take care xx

I'm going into town early. I hate shopping (unless town's near enough empty!) so have planned my route to make it as quick as possible – luckily the shops I need to visit are close together. So I can get off the bus at one stop and walk to the next bus stop to come back home while nipping in shops along the way. Should take me no longer than half an hour, the bus journeys will take longer than the shopping :D

    Morning All

Sorry, but I had quite a good nights sleep! Had to keep the bedroom window closed as the wind was making too much noise but it seems to be calmer today.

Went for a look in the cellar yesterday - the first time I have been home in daylight all week - and the water has nearly gone, if it's ok at the weekend I'll go and sort it out, I think the oil filled radiators are destined for the tip even though they are sat on pallets.

Didn't do much after the hospice shift last night, I was just too tired. Work night out tonight, must look out the shoes although I'll regret that tomorrow. Going to drive anyway so should be bright and breezy for the washing machine delivery! How sad that I am looking forward to that.

nmlc - So glad you can treat yourself.
tru - Me singing in a child's voice was worse than normal!

Have a good Friday. Take care. XX

I slept until 5 this morning, so I feel much better.
I got most of my Christmas shopping done yesterday, just need to post a couple of cards today & then I'm done.
It seems everyone in my team is buying/wearing the same dress on the last day of term, I'm being very bah humbug, I'm not spending £16 on a dress only to throw it away. I've also refused invites to the 2 Christmas Do's, one is £30, the other is £45, but I'd have to add taxi fares on to that as I don't do night driving. I have joined in with one of the Secret Santa's £5 & the obligatory gift for the boss £6.50.
Time I fed the fish, have a good day everyone.
    Hugs Hester

    Morning all,

Too dark to see what the weather is doing but off to work for me anyway so no real matter, I am very pleased its Friday as I am shattered.

I went to see the doc yesterday with the pains in my wrists knees and feet, my wrists are so bad now I cant hold a pen, anyway he is doing blood tests, so hopefully we will start to get to the bottom of it.

Takeaway for dinner tonight as we are all shattered, it will probably be an Indian as we all fancy that.

Right better get on have good days all xx
  • TRU I am tempted to actually sing along, rather than hum, as your choice for today suits my tone slightly better! But I'll never make a singer! HESTER you have reminded me why I hated Christmas so much when I was working! I used to dread all the dressing up, parties, exchanging gifts etc. MRS LW I forgot to add that I hope you are feeling better today. REDRUBY much sympathy for you too xx

    Morning everyone.

Another wet night. Yesterday was very weird, long periods of bright sunshine and then sudden prolonged heavy torrential rain and wind. I went out first thing into town, took rubbish to the tip and did some meat buying from the butcher,,all destined for the freezer. Whilst I was there I ordered a piece of pork for next week as I want to experiment with a James Martin recipe. (Didn't get it done last week)

When I was shopping I couldn't find my debit card, spent some time searching for it at home without success and so rang the bank to cancel it. Five minutes later I suddenly remembered where I had put it! Typical. I'm usually so meticulous in putting it in the right place too just to avoid this kind of situation so I was both really annoyed with myself and really amused. Luckily if I need cash the two employees of the bank know me so I can get cash out if I want.

Today I've got a neighbour calling in to do a fiddly bit of DIY for me then I have some paperwork to deal with for one of my casual jobs.

Thanks so much for the Christmas song again tru, I always like the decorations too.

Right, I need to get myself sorted, neighbour is coming round after the school run.

I hope everyone had a good day.

    Good morning everyone :hello:

I was another who slept badly but I am coming down with a cold so that is why. Hubby has been off work for the last couple of days with his cold as he feels so awful. I feel like painting a big cross on the door and issuing bells and 'unclean' signs to wear around our necks

Milo arrives sometime today so that will be fun. Max will be over the moon to see his buddy and I will be moving ornaments out of the way of two bouncy waggy dogs.

I must shift myself and jump in the shower and get dressed today. I am expecting deliveries again today including a Santa's Workshop lego set that I bought for me to do. I know it's childish but I love lego and rarely get the chance to play with it. I need to clear off the dining room table as it has become a real dumping ground over the past week.

I have a couple of presents to wrap and a general tidy up but that's about it for me. I don't know what we will be eating either, I will see what I can be bothered to throw into the oven later.

I hope you all have a great day whatever you are up to, take care xx

    Morning everyone,

Dark, damp and much colder out there, the girls are drying off on their beds.

The radiator in our bedroom has decided to stop working, don't have it on very high anyway as like a cooler room to sleep in but this morning it was stone cold, DOH has tried bleeding it but no air come out so will call the heating people back out.

Had a lovely evening last night with my friends, started early as one of them was coming straight from work so we were sitting down by 5.30. We went to p&zza ex&press, am not a massive pizza fan but I had one of the ones with a big pile of salad in the middle rather than all dough which have to say was very tasty. The Chocolate and Orange torte had for afters was even better though :j

Off to the stable this morning so fingers crossed it dries up and then housework this afternoon to get house sorted before the weekend as have loads on.

RR. - hugs m'dear, fingers crossed they can do something soon.
Tru - love that one, Nat King Cole's lovely voice always pops into my head

Have a good day folks, take care all x
