We used to live across the road from the VG store when I was a kid. Indeed my Mum uaed to work there. And I had completely forgotten what it was called until I read your post TS! We also used to have a Fine Fare which I think was taken over by Somerfield.
I remember VG stores. And Mace and Spar. Actually they're probably everywhere except for my corner of SW London/Surrey borders.
I remember loads of supermarket chains that don't exist anymore : Templeton's (used to work in one on Byre's Road), Galbraiths, Cochrane's, William Low's, FineFare?, Safeways, and many more. Most maybe based in Central Scotland, but some were across the UK.There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
Ah Zag you've made me smile with Willie Low's. Always remember going to the one in Oban, for some reason, with my Gran and cousins in the school holidays...those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.

I remember Sunderland had Binns which was on both sides of the road and was joined together by a tunnel under said road. Also had Joplings which was also know as Robbs??? in other parts.
IIRC Fine Fare became Gateway which then became Food Giant.
It was also frowned upon in my school days if your parents shopped in Joblot.
I think I remember a store called Chipaway or something similar.
Geordie Jeans on Blanford Street which also stocked the NAFF Co54 jeans.
Josephs toy shop was the greatest place in the world.
C&A was were everyone arranged to meet each other in Sunderland. "I'll meet you in town, outside C&A".0 -

Many thanks to all for the good travel advice. Got to West Central Scotland eventually after problems between London and Oxford and then BIrmningham to Manchester (and no real problems north of that. Except it was windy (and not a Scotch Bonnet pepper in sight).
Am looking forward to consuming pakora. Big-time!
Glad you made it home. Have some spiced onions for me. I found an Indian here that does pretty authentic pakora but the onion to sauce ratio is all wrong :rotfl::rotfl:it's just not dipable

Fine Fayre own brand. Gaudy yellow packaging with black stencilled lettering. Fine Fayre turned into Asda where I was0 -

I remember Gateway. We used to have loads of different chains. Waitrose and Sainsburys used to be very southern but are now all over the north and probably Scotland too.
I find nobody in London seems familiar with B&M and Home Bargains. Can't wait for that to change. :beer:There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0
