Wood Burning Stove Heat Question

I am also based in NI.
Do glow eggs give off a flame? Also, do you just fill the bottom and light it.... how long does that last? You must go through those quicker than logs?
I start the fire using the glow eggs. Some firelighters and kindling below the eggs then throw a few oak logs on when its going. The eggs last for hours. About 10 eggs and four logs does about 5 hours with great heat. That's with a good flame.0 -
i use the eggs as well
I have my stove lit for around 12 hrs a day and use a scuttle of smokeless
We also have soft logs, and they really do vary in how much heat they produce, all it takes is one wet one and your heat out put lowers. I prefer to use logs for those not so cold days, or when Ive been at work and only have the stove lit for a couple of hours0 -

Nice! Thanks for the help, I will try this out and see how I go.
Actually got a huge bag of softwood delivered last night, really big logs, I will have to spend a few hours chopping them down haha. On the way to my house they got caught in the terrible sleet and rain so they got quite wet, but by the time I get to burn them hopefully they'll be drier again0 -
A bit of rain shouldn't matter too much as if stored correctly the wind will blow them dry, the the water that was in the tree when it was alive is what you want rid off.
Anyone selling seasoned or kiln dried logs shouldn't have a problem with you splitting a couple and testing them with something like this:

Ideally you're looking for less than 20% moisture on the inside of the logs.In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0 -
We've got a big room with a Morso squirrel. Room is 8 x 3m approx made up of two room originally, with the Morso in a fireplace in one of the rooms.
It will heat the room but you need good fuel and plenty of it. I have only burned wood, and hardwood at that, though it is a multifuel stove and I should give coal a go.
The main thing we have found is you have to run it hard. I have both vents wide open most of the time. I read about people turning theirs down, but this is a rare event for me.0 -
We use a combination of coal and well seasoned logs, the coal seems to make the stove radiate more heat. It does take a good couple of hours to really start kicking out decent heat though.0

Yep, takes ages for the heat to start really radiating out. It's OK if we have the stove door open but the stove itself takes a long time to heat up. Wasn't a cheap one either...0 -

Are you loading it with enough fuel and giving it enough air?
My fire box will be glowing bright red before I shut the air down completely. I get great heat of mine0 -
