Yes you can do the whole thing on line.

The VED/Tax is unaffected as it has nothing to do with the 'cherished plate'.

So how does that work with different tax rates, the new car's rate is half that of the old one. I have to do the same thing with our other car, I'm just waiting for the V5C in my name to come through for it. In it's case, I recently taxed it's predecessor for 6 months costing £99, but the new car is only £30 for 12 months.

The tax stays with the car, not transferred with the plate.

Ok, thanks for your prompt reply, I'm obviously getting a bit thick in my old age! :rotfl:

Sorry to jump in with yet another question.
I have a car with (it's first and only) reg number that I would like to retain when I part ex the car for a used car via a dealer.
Can I do it reasonably quickly? We need a car in daily use.
    Thanks for any info.
I am not a cat (But my friend is)

Same as any other plate transfer.

Put the plate onto retention, or transfer it straight onto the other car. The one that it's coming off will be allocated a previously un-issued age-related plate by DVLA as part of that.

Ten minutes or less on the DVLA web-site - is that quick enough. ;)

That will immediately give you the retention certificate number and the new reg number that Adrian C has mentioned.

Then you need to get the plates made up - usually any that I order from eBay arrive the next day or at most 2 days.

Thanks for your help folks, eventually managed to speak to a very helpful lady at DVLA, humans exist there after all!

I'll be doing the transferring of my personal reg on Monday, when I can get the new plates for the old car ordered.

Thanks, can I use the car on the original plates while getting the new ones made up?

If the number has by then been transferred, I don't think so. There would be insurance issues, and if you happened to pass an ANPR camera.

You can use the car with it's original plates while you are waiting for the new plates to be made up.

The DVLA just say that you should change over/fit the new plates as soon as possible.

There is nothing in the notes that say the car cannot be used during the change over/waiting period.

You tell the insurance company when you physically change the plates.

If you are really worried about it then carry a print-out of the retwntion certificate with you.

A delay of a few days will not create any problems - you're not committing any crime and you are not attempting to deceive anyone.
