Warm air heating

In our last house we had warm air heating and boy do we miss it.
Same type of problem as you, BG condemned it and wanted silly money to replace it with a wet system.
I found an older gas fitter who had experience with warm air systems
and spoke to him about replacements, then I rang Johnson and Starley and we found a newer system, I bought it and the gas fitter fitted it and it was even cheaper to run than the old one.
There is some info here but I wouldn't be surprised if your original flue could be repaired rather cheaply. It's just as case of finding the right person to do it.

An older still qualified fitter if you can find one is your best bet as I found the younger ones had no idea as warm air is not widely used so much now. I found a guy on the verge of retirement and he was a very good find.
Good luck.

Ps BG had ventilation issues with the new system! I spoke to the fitter and then booked BG in again for a service, the fitter walked in whilst BG were telling me how inadequate the ventilation in our house was and he ripped them to pieces :rotfl: they left with their tails well and truly between their legs never to be seen again. I was disgusted that I was lied to by BG. Never been near them since!!Planning on starting the GC again soon

Get an indie in who can supply & fit, its about £10 a meter for the 316 and twice that for the 904 flexi + VAT. Watch your back on the 'building regs' DIY is always easier with the push-fitting type. Old or disabled ? I would find say 4 local suppliers and pay them a visit, and get as many names & numbers of fitters as you can then work your way through them for a 'price on completion'. Best of luck.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. Get an indie in who can supply & fit,
Easier said than done, I spent months trying to get someone other than SG to even look at mine.
Nobody was interested, even J&S's approved installer was over 50 miles away and after one phone call to find out where I was I never heard from him again.0 -
I think you need to get someone else to have a look at it. If its metal twin wall flue pipe commonly made by companies such as selkirk then the pipes and fittings interlock together and are commonly taped at the joints. Along with the brackets as specified, its rare for it to be problematic unless its corroded.its just a big rount flue metal pipe going up through the loft. BG have been servicing it since 2010.
Its leaking at the joints.

I'll agree, what you need to do is find an ex local authority fitter who will have service checked thousands over the years. That's why my positive advice in #14 to contact local suppliers of flu who will know manufacturers & fitters.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. As I said, no one was interested.
I've replaced the warm air heating now, as I posted in post #3.
And to be frank, I prefer my new heating to the old warm air, no more 21 deg downstairs and 25 deg upstairs (because of the above door vents causing the heat to rise from the lounge)and cold draughts because of the ventilation needed.0 -
I think there is a certain amount of apprehension amongst some GSR Engineers when it comes to FWA units. The reason is that many of them have not worked on them, many do not have a FWA endorsement on their GSR card and most of these units are open flued.
