We have ths at the moment or rather did have this morning till the engineer came to service the system and promptly condemned it. The boiler itself if 15 years old and could have been mended but the flue that goes up and through the attick is leaking fumes, so they gave us a price for replaceing the flue, guess....
£2 thousand pounds parts and labour. I am under a service agreement and apparently it doesn cover for the flue.

We have 2 choices
New Warm air boiler and flue
or
New wet system.

We think we are going to stay with the warm air because we like it, it is efficient and instant heat.
Has anyone had one fitted lately and could anyone say what roundabout it cost them. Obviously all the vents and ducting doesn't need replacing.

Otherwise how much would a whole new wet system cost, including radiators for a 3 bed house. approx. 6/7 radiators.

Can anyone help with a ball park figure.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Why do both flue and boiler need to be replaced? Why not fix the boiler fault and replace just the flue?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    The cost of repairs?

The pilot lights costing £100 a year in gas?

The £250 a year BG wanted for maintenance, they were also the only company locally who would service it no one else wanted to.

When the boiler fired there was an almighty draught across the kitchen floor because of the ventilation needed and the temperature plummeting in the kitchen when the heating was off during the night.

There comes a time when you just say !!!! it and give up.

I replaced my warm air heating for the same reason, flue would need to be replaced and even more increased ventilation needed.

I am now using 20% less gas with my combi and radiators than with my warm air.

    Also quieter.

Even using slightly less electricity as the pump uses less than the big fan.

I used to think that warm air heating was the best but not now.

I paid just over £6000. for 8 radiators but it depends on where you stay.

What is the flue material? Is it metallic twin wall flue pipe? where is it leaking? Was it BG who serviced it? If so , there is an agenda at BG to flog new heating systems to punters whether they need it or not.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Traditionally the pros of warm air heating are less plumbing so less chance of leaks plus the possibility of including air filtration so less dust around the house. The cons are that you need a slightly higher air temperature to get the same degree of comfort due to absence of radiant heating plus the possibility of some fan noise. For new build the air ducting tales up a fair amount of space but you already have that in place.
Installing a wet system in an existing house means a certain amount of disruption , maybe brutalising of timber floors and maybe more obtrusive pipe work ...all depending on the layout of the house.

For the poster who said why not just replace the flue, because he went off for a price and it was 2 thousand pounds..... with no guarantee that the boiler wouldn't give up the ghost in a months time.

its just a big rount flue metal pipe going up through the loft. BG have been servicing it since 2010.
    Its leaking at the joints.

My brothers was condemned twice, once because there were no parts for repair and once for the flue replacement. The parts are freely available and always have been BG salesment tell ies to reach targets, my bro bought a whole brand new old stock boiler 9 years ago we pinched the burner as a new parts replacement the rest is still untouched - no more parts needed. The flue was extra bracket[ry] needed, I bought and bent a bit of alloy and pop-riveted a made to measure bracket and our 14 year old skinny nephew crawled into the loft space and screwed it to the wall. BG have passed it every year since - they are after money nowt more greedy sods.

Leaky joints is a different reason you could probably have a whole brand new one fabricated, or the existing one sleeved, or get it professionally sealed and get another 50 years out of your Johnson & Starley. The system is a good'n and very comfortable, more than 45 decades old and still efficient and cheap to run. Best of luck.
