So-called "lifetime bans" in any walk of life are an abomination. They are normally imposed by buffoons of the highest order. People change over the years, as your chippy realised. The SAR option is perhaps worth trying. It's also worth noting that financial organisations are not allowed to keep personal data longer than necessary. I know this gives them great leeway, and the ICO are a toothless bunch, but if you come up against a brick wall with the bank you might consider reporting their stance the the regulators.

That's correct but if that is for the lifetime of a previous customer they no longer wish to do business with then it would come under 'necessary'.

Not necessarily. It may well be in breach of DP guidelines to keep such data indefinitely. By issuing a lifetime ban they are, in effect, saying they're going to keep data on that basis. These organisations need challenging on such matters.

It isn't a breach of DP guidelines.

If I do do that and it says something completely outrageous, do I have any recourse?

It won't. Holding basic details of people the bank does not wish to do business with is perfectly acceptable. There'll be no explanation of why etc. Nor do they have to justify to you why as it's a commercial decision. Much in the same way you can choose which supermarket to buy from.

A waste of time. They won't know anything as they wouldn't be told any more than the customer.

Banks have told me many things over the phone/online, which were not the case when you go there is person.

Santander were convinced I did not hold a passbook account with them, I went to branch, and it was found at once.

That may be the case but this is not the same scenario.

I've spoken to the department that makes these decisions many times down the years and I've rarely been given more than the tiniest hint what the issue is.

    Always worth a try.:D

I have been told many times, this can't be done, that can't be done, its a matter of finding and talking to the right people.

Anything is possible in todays world.......

The 'right people' will be non-customer facing in an office somewhere. Going into a branch will be an utter waste of time.

This thread is just getting silly now.
