Company Xmas Tradition

Pfft how rude! I'd only be going along with this if the vouchers part paid for gifts for the staff, but even that would be pushing it!0

That's crazy! I work in the public sector and we get nothing, and also part time in a supermarket and we get a Christmas meal and extra discount usually. My husband works for a small family run firm and they get some M&S vouchers (about £40 usually) plus wine and chocs from the company.0

I didn't mean staff should automatically receive presents, just that, in the OP's case, the company wants the directors to receive gifts, so the company should pay out of its profits.0 -
Fair enough makes sense. I do think its barmy though against the OP but if they are paid substantially above the average wage at a push I can see its acceptability.Hedgehog99 wrote: »I didn't mean staff should automatically receive presents, just that, in the OP's case, the company wants the directors to receive gifts, so the company should pay out of its profits.
Plus better of seeing it as a business decision to take some emotion out of it.Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -
I think it's cheeky (and that's putting it mildly). I'll fully admit I'm a tight-wad over things like this, but the idea of contributing towards a Christmas gift for someone who is likely to be on a much, much higher salary than me rankles, especially if it's presented as something that I'm 'obliged' to do.0

|that's bizarre.
As a general rule, where there are gifts in a work environment, they tend to go down not up, so senior members of staff may give gifts to their employees or subordinates.
In this instance, my actions would depend on how the arrangement is managed. If the collection is of the 'pass the envelope round and put in what you want' I would probably take it and put nothing, or a token amount.
If it is monitored, I might contribute this year as a new employee and then see about challenging it next year when I'd got to know colleagues better.
Of course, in hindsight responding to the directors wife with a cheery, polite and innocent (said with an air of genuine interest "Oh, what an unusual custom - what do the directors do for the staff?"
I have ever heard of anyone behaving like your new bosses. Most places where I have worked there are collections for special occasions, so a director / boss who was retiring, or getting married, or becoming a parent would usually get a gift from staff, and a less senior staff member would normally get a gift from staff and a separate one from the Partners / Directors, but not as a routine christmas thing.
Start planning for next year. Vive La Revolution! All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0 -
I was wondering what to do with those left over Cuban pesos. Would you like them to contribute. |If they are ever in Cuba I think they may be worth as much as £1.250

Thanks guys, similar responses to my co-workers. I don't really get the need to thank the directors - for giving me a job? For paying me? For the social events that I have to pay for myself? I'm not sure it's the directors idea to be honest, I think it's the MD's wife. She said an envelope will come round so I may just add a penny - unless she stands over me, which I can foresee!!0

Say it with flowers - bring 'em a cactus.0

The cheek of it, have never encountered this ever, usually any gift or reward comes down the hill not up.0
