When staying at the Hilton Strathclyde my husband went to buy a pint and a glass of white wine for me. The barman said this white wine or that one? My oh says oh that one please and it cost him £10.50 for the wine alone !!! Over £14 for the 2 drinks. Never been ripped off like it!travelover0

Stayed in London this weekend for the Rugby, we stayed at a well known brand of Hotel on the South side near Tower Bridge. A G and T was ordered by me...... £6.00 for the Gin and another £2.50 for the Tonic, needless to say I didn't have another, just a Boddingtons at a whopping £3.84.....
Great weekend though!!
My solution to expensive hotels has always been this.
Go to the bar and order the largest bottle of sparkling water they have and a glass with ice and lemon.
Take said bottle to your room , empty then fill with gin and tonic you have bought previously at a supermarket.
Return with your bottle and keep going back to the bar for ice and lemon for your " WATER " .
Works every time !

My daughter works behind the bar at a 4* hotel. She tells me the prices and I really can't believe it. She says the most expensive whisky is £13 a shot
As others have said though, most are on expenses so don't care about the price.

I was never allowed to claim booze on expenses, nor would I expect to be able to. When I was sent off to a nice hotel, always ended up finding the local, cheaper, pub for drinks. We all evolve - get on with it0 -
£18 for G&T is my personal highest rip-off. It was only Gordon's as well. But it was a mini-bar in the Maldives. Needless to say it was the only drink drank out of it!0

I find this even worse when abroad when the cost of living is much cheaper than in UK. For instance I live in Tanzania and you pay 1,000Tsh (about 40p) for a beer in a bar but in a hotel visited by tourists you can pay 3 times that amount and tourists pay it because they think they are getting a good deal.
Consequently locals cannot afford to eat and drink in hotels. Needless to say that most of the hotels are owned by foreigners (wazungu).0 -
Mini bars are a totally different kettle of fish altogethertravelover0

7It was the Devere Mottram Hall in Cheshire. (4* hotel)
The thing is, if the drink prices had been more reasonable they would have got more money out of us.
much appreciated, my mother is trying to push for us to get married there, now I have a bloody good reason why not!! Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -

I can
but it comes off food budget allowance, which is £28 per night, not often I go over that, unless entertaining clients.
A hotel i worked in had a Cognac for £450 a shot! I tried nearly 3 grands worth one night when bored to see how "special" it was.
I hasten to add my tastebuds arent refined enough for those prices.0 -

There was a wedding on whilst we were there and were discussing, amongst ourselves, how much money the guests would need for the day and were wondering what the actual cost of a wedding would be there. Astronomical is what we came up with. (Off topic to this thread, but we had the Table D'Hote menu @ £24.95. The food and presentation was excellent but the portions were minute and we were all still hungry when we had finished! Less than 2 hours later we got some crisps. On a positive note the grounds are nice, especially around by the lake.)0 -
