Virgin Media - WiFi Issues?

I'm currently struggling with my Virgin Media broadband connection using the WiFi on the Super Hub 2. It constantly needs rebooting to allow devices to connect, or reconnect - mutliple times each day.

Yes I have a lot of devices connected - a few televisions, xbox, Wii, multiple ipads, iphones and other phones.

I rang Technical Support who "tweaked" a few settings a while back but it's made no difference.

Do I need a new router from Virgin?

Do I need to give up with the Virgin router and use it as a modem and then buy an Apple or Netgear wifi router?

Thanks,

Ian

You could ask virgin for a new router, but there no guarantee it'll fix the problem. The superhub 2 is alot better than the first one, but its still not great for wi-fi.

i run mine in modem mode with a separate router, not really had any problems. If you rely on wifi alot with lots of devices, then a decent wifi router is probably the way to go

I have similar problems although not as bad, dropping out, slow internet/downloading.
All our devices are connected through wifi as the hub2 is away from them, and the main problems are with iphones/xboxes.

We do have a TPLink signal booster upstairs, which is ok, but not great.

Can you recommend a Wifi router?

  • Bit the bullet - went for an Apple AirPort Extreme. Not cheap at 169, but so far so good.

Really easy to setup and no issues, but it's only been 18 hours so far...
  • My WiFi keeps crashing with virgin media it's rubbish but they don't care once you are signed up just have to keep rebooting considering it's supposed to be the best broadband ha ha.

You may want to consider using home plugs/power lines. I find these great especially for my smart tv's, sky boxes etc. They send the broadband signal through the electricity cables and then connect devices via ethernet.

    I use these ones:

but you can also get others with more ethernet ports or with pass through so you do not use a plug socket (for example

This might be stating the obvious, but if you use the range extender using the mains, make sure the appropriate mains are on the same circuit.
My Dad wanted to exchange the range of his (funnily enough Virgin) router, but the sockets upstairs where the router is located was on a different mains circuit to the downstairs sockets.
So we had to use one of those signal amplifiers instead.
We used a Netgear signal amplifier which seems to work well.
I am not sure about this, but don't Virgin have a router version 3 now?

Yes, the VM Superhub 3 is now being rolled out to new users but from my reading of the VM forums it's not getting a very good 'press'.

I have the VM Superhub 2ac which is ok but I wasn't too impressed with the Wi-Fi range. So I now run it in modem mode with an Asus RT-AC68U router attached which is proving very effective.
