Charges on ending my broadband contract

I just switched to a new broadband provider in the last month of my contract. To my surprise, I was charged for terminating the contract early.

I was wondering if there is any way to avoid this in the future?

Is it possible to arrange to switch on the day your contract should finish so that you don't get charged?

Yes.Leave booking the takeover until nearer the need of your contract.

There is no way to specify a precise switch date

This time, the end of contract charge was £4 so I'm not so bothered, but next year it will be over £13.

My contract for this year was due to end on the 31st December but, as I instructed the switch yesterday (the 8th) they estimate that the switch will take place on the 22nd. That's exactly two week's later. I can't help but wonder, if I'd left my instruction to switch till the 18th, would I have been charged at all (or would it have rolled over into the new contract)?

From what Macman suggests, there's no real way to control the switch date.

Most switches are exactly 14 days later as that is the cooling off period they must allow. My contract ended with PlusNet on the 9th November and my account was showing a £4 cancellation charge. I signed up for Sky on the 27th October and switch date was given as 10th November, exactly 14 days later.

No cancellation charge was levied by PlusNet as I left the day after my contract ended.

I'd go for 14 days as that's always what I've been given for a switch. If you phone up the gaining provider they can usually organise a specific date.

if you did leave the cancel until later the Christmas holidays are likely to have got in the way and you could well end up with no service.

The switch is done from one company to another, so if no switch is done, you stay with the original supplier.

    Yes, PlusNet.

Thanks. I'll schedule when to switch next year.

100% correct but only if every switch goes through faultlessly .As this forum says no they don't always then holiday periods may make faultless less likely .

It's amazing that EE will pay you upto £100 if you need to terminate your contract early to move to them !
