Elf on a shelf

OK, so a friend of mine's daughter has numerous pics on facebbok about this. What the hell is all this about, can anyone enlighten me?

It's supposed to be some sort of elf sent from Santa to watch over children and check they're behaving but the parents manipulate the elf at night so he gets up to mischief or brings treats or whatever.

They scare the bejeebus out of me though. They look like they're going to come alive in the night and murder people. There's something in their eyes and smile.

I'm so glad it's not just me that thinks this is hideous... Every day an old school friend of mine pops up 'This morning we found Jingles (wherever)' and it makes me want to find out where she lives now and use 'jingles' as an offensive weapon :o As a child that would have scared the living daylights out of me I hate dolls.:(:(

  • I read about the Roonies doing this, but had no idea it was a tradition, just thought it was something they did.
  • Theres nothing ridiculous about it, it's a bit of fun. I've had one for my daughter for the past 4 years, the "super creepy" elf turns up in our house on December 1st and hides around the house every night, she LOVES finding him.

We do have a bit of elf activity in our house: On Christmas eve afternoon, the doorbell goes and when we open the door the elves have left a basket on the doorstep. Inside are new pyjamas, a christmassy DVD, story book and a Cadbury's chocolate elf bar each. It breaks up the waiting, provides a bit of calm entertainment and has the added benefit of providing nice cheery PJ's for those Christmas morning photo's :)

Elf On The Shelf seems to require quite a lot of work and imagination and IMO gets the children even more hyped up about Christmas. Opening advent calendars, burning the advent candles and having the bedtime story by Christmas-tree-light are sufficient traditions for us in the run-up to the big day.

I believe it's a US tradition that is slowly coming over here. My nephews have an elf who Santa sends to check they are behaving and he is a very naughty elf indeed. He has been found drunk next to an empty bottle of gin, he toilet-papered the christmas tree, he set up a zipline from the top of the tree to the mantlepiece, he made snow-angels out of flour, he hangs out with Barbie...

The kids love finding him every morning.

I have an elf too so I send my nephews photos of him. My elf is quite the traveller - he was in Hong Kong a couple of years ago when I had to visit for work in December, he often turns up in the office and he was waiting in our hotel room fridge in New York last year.

I can see why some may find it creepy, but it all depends how you "sell" it. For our family, it's a bit of fun.
  • My children love finding the Elf in the mornings. Our one is very well behaved as he doesn't want to be giving the children any ideas!

I thought the accompanying storybook was supposed to convince the children to be little angels for fear of not getting any Christmas presents, but I'm assuming they think that Santa is a forgiving sort!
