ADVICE - Any apps out there that let you make calls via Data ?

Hi

Ran out of minutes and 3 want £10 for an extra 150mins (i get my allowance back in 5 days-600mins).

I have used all my minutes before (its capped at 600mins).

I am aware of Whatsapp and Skype, but most people do not have it, is there an app to make calls as normal using my unlimited data ?

Cheers

It's very unlikely that you can call to mobiles for 'free' using just mobile data.

To call landlines for 5p+1p/min you can use, say, 18185 and their 0808 access number (need to register). Mobiles are 5p+10p/min

    Use the RINGO calling App

Calling a Uk mobile is .8p* a minute over WiFi

The recipient does not need wifi or an app

*This amount varies according how much you load your account prior

You could use a callback service like https://www.localphone.com/services/callback handy if you run out of inclusive minutes. No need for mobile data.

Minimum top up of £ 5 which you can use later also

    UK mobile to landline 1.6 =0.5 = 2.01p a minute
    UK mobile to mobile 1.6 x 2 = 3.2p a minute.

Free 5 minute test call available.

    You might be surprised.

There are many VoIP applications which allow calls via wifi or mobile data, and for some of these, including Ringo already mentioned, free credit can be earned by watching (or pretending to watch) brief video adverts or installing and starting (then removing) certain (mostly games) applications.

I've accrued about 6000 landline minutes worth of credit in about a year and a half of owning an Android phone. That would cover about 2500 minutes to UK mobiles.

If someone doesn't fancy that rigmarole, or the memory space used for the several apps, go for one of the Dellmont bands and use their MobileVoip app, call rates from 0.1 cents to UK landlines, 0.5 cents to UK mobiles. VoIP via data, or use callback.

As well as on the mobile phone, I also have a couple of VoIP accounts on a Gigaset home phone, and calls are so far working out about a tenth of the price of using 18185 from home.

And there is also the mobile brand FreedomPop, which offers a couple of hundred minutes a month of free calls, though I'm not sure at the moment about recommending it. I have it on a dual SIM phone, and their app disables the other SIM for outgoing calls.

edit: for VoIP via mobile data, a 3g connection is usually required, though some call attempts may just about be possible on 2g EDGE if it is a good connection and a low bandwidth codec. Best to have callback as an option as well for 2g coverage, or callthrough access via freephone number, including 18185 service.

I used to use Viber.... Checked account charges... Will not, ever!
Skype, WhatsApp, but then, if wants reliable service- get a fair priced network, if all else is failure as is. my £0.02penies
  • As others have mentioned, there is 18185 and also their sister company 1899.com (5p per call plus 1p per min to UK land lines when accessing via their 0808 number).

If you top up a Skype account you can make calls to ordinary phones, the cost is a connection fee of 3.1p and 1.8p per minute to UK land lines and many other destinations too.

If you "chat" a lot, then getting your regular contacts to also use Skype is the better deal!
