BT b/band total scam perhaps?

Options
Someone please help me understand this. My wireless b/band speed is supposed to be 54.0 Mbps but when I check my speed online it says different.

My downstream speed online is - 138 kb
My upstream speed online is - 340 kb

I have been moaning about how slow my connection is but feel fobbed off when I mention it. Is there a discrepancy between what I am paying for and what I am getting. Downloading basic mp3 single takes forever and even webcamming is affected by the slow connection. I have a brand new high spec laptop so something must be wrong surely ?!

Before I got wireless I swear it was miles quicker

Your wireless speed shown (54Mbps) is the maximum speed over the wireless link and actually has nothing to do with your broadband speed.

Use a speed tester to check your real ADSL speed.

or access the bt hub via

    http://bthomehub.home/

    mine shows

Broadband connection details: spacer.gifspacer.gifspacer.gif Downstream 4,704 Kbps spacer.gifspacer.gifspacer.gif Upstream 448 Kbps

but my speedtest results show more like 3.4 Meg and 380kps

I've more than doubled my connection speed by replacing ALL the splitters and disconnecting ALL the extension wiring from the BT master socket except for wires 2 + 5 (the others are not required and just soak in interference)

That is your line sync speed not the actual achieved download speed, which is different and will depend on many other factors like server loading etc.

I have used both the bt homehub and speedtest link this morning before I posted. They both showed corresponding figures hence why I mentioned online results.

Is your homehub plugged into the BT master socket?

Have you tried using the test socket behind the faceplate to eliminate any extension wiring?

What speed do you get when using an Ethernet cable?

Have you tried changing the wireless channel?
