    As mentioned above The GIMP is a very good image editor. It is also very popular which means there a lot of tutorials on youtube on how to use it.

    Not long ago you could get an old version of Photoshop for free. I have CS2, old but does everything I want.

    Another thought. Our local photo shop has DIY print machines that allow some editing, cropping, colour balance etc. and are not expensive.

    most people don't need fancy multi gigabyte third party editor's, microsoft paint can crop photo's, it has been bundled with windows in one form or another for three decades.

    GIMP is great, but likely too powerful for what you need! It's a bit like trying to make toothpicks with a chainsaw, yes you can, but may also cause yourself problems and pain. Paint.net is probably a little gentler for a first time user.
