Warning to all cashiers etc

Hi all,

Just wanted to share something that happened yesterday. Was in asda and the guy in front of me wanted to purchase a £5 top up using not only a £50 note but a Scottish one at that. It was refused and the guy walked out. Apparently it's a common scam, and I was assured if the value of the transaction had been around £50 they would have probably accepted it.

Unfortunately for the cashier in the neighbouring Iceland, he purchased a box of chocs with the same note.

Sometimes, I buy a £2 item and find I only have a £20 note in my wallet. Is that any different?

It might have been a scam, maybe the guy just wanted to break a £50 note and knew the big supermarkets were more likely to accept a Scottish note they don't see much than smaller places. Unless the cashier actually checked if the note was genuine I think it's unfair to assume the guy was a scammer.

The only note we don't accept is the £100 note that one of the Scottish banks issues. Though if the customer produced this note late in the day and spent £80+, I think we can accept it, as its only like a customer spending a few quid and paying with a £20. That situation has never happened.

I am guessing the cashier in Asda never seen a Scottish note and therefore refused it. I have been to Asda with a Scottish £20 and accepted it.

The most common forgeries are the 10 and 20 English pound notes, they have even been known to have been issued by cash machines :(

Your average England based cashier wouldn't be as familiar with a Scottish £50 note as they would be with an English £50 note so it's fair to say they should exercise more caution around something with which they aren't familiar.

I think this is a wee case of paranoia on your part.
