Windows update issue

I am having a problem with windows 7 update.
Basically all updates fail. It says it is downloading updates but always shows 0kb total and 0% completed.
Shutdown button shows updates waiting to be installed when I shutdown but shutdown always sticks at logging out and so needs a hard reboot to continue.
This is a clean install (due to CPU failure and just needing to tidy things up) that I have tried 3 times now with the same problem.
Any suggestions on where the problem lies ?
Thanks

I've heard this a lot recently. Patience seems to be the main solution. How long ago did you do the reinstall? Needs to be left 24hours ideally....otherwise read on...
This "Fix it" https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058 if you select "Aggressive mode" will delete the SoftwareDistribution folder.
... followed by install the latest version of Windows Update: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102810
Followed by reboot, then go to Control Panel Windows Update and check for updates and wait for several minutes...0 -

get in touch with Microsoft support, failing that you may have to take it to a pc shop as you may have some bugs that require cleaning and that could be halting the update-X-Missima-X-0

running through the advice above now.
I re-installed 3 days ago and apart from the usual reboots have done nothing with it and let it get on with things itself.
However when I do try to reboot it refuses to log off - left it for 8hrs at one point and it never got beyond logging off.0 -
Start hitting this fixit trail then. Keep a note of what you've done...fingers crossed will suddenly spring into life...0

How many updates are showing? If it's a lot, then selecting a few at a time manually in date order may work.... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0

Have a read, especially about downloading Internet Explorer 11 as a standalone download.
