ISAs, joint accounts ans help to buy

Options
I have used my Isa allowance for the year tying some money away. I have a fiancee who is a student who hasn't. We want a help to buy Isa which was always planned to be in her name, however she doesn't have an account with Halifax (which seems to be the best HtBI at the moment). As she is a student (final year) it is difficult to open either a regular account (no income) or a student account (near the end). So my question is, could I open a joint current account at Halifax (with my income) and then she on her own can open the help to buy Isa? Does that work? Is that allowed? Are there any other suggestions?

Thank you

The terms haven't yet been published but I would say it is 99.99% certain she doesn't need any account with Halifax in order to apply for the HTB ISA.
  • Thank you, but I thought most banks would want someone to have a current account with then before allowing access to savings accounts? Or am I completely wrong?

    Not to my knowledge.

You might need a current account, known as a "linked account" to get money out of a savings account, but that can be at any bank.

Let's see what's in the T&Cs which should be out by tomorrow.
  • I rang them up to book an appointment and they confirmed you don't need an account from Halifax to open a Help to Buy ISA with them.
