Spec me a new desktop pc

I've had my Acer Aspire T180 since 2007 but am thinking about a new PC.

I find that when I am downloading it really slows down the PC and sometimes I am unable to use it especially if its downloading at 10mb/s or I have more than one file downloading at the same time.

I use the PC for playing Age of Empires, downloading and surfing with some word processing.

In the past I have doubled the (to two gb) RAM and I have an external 1TB drive.

Can anyone recommend me a new machine? Or is there anything I can do to upgrade the one I have?

downloading might slow down the internet responsiveness, but shouldn't slow down the pc

Sometimes it causes it to crash, I generally find the faster the download the less I can do on the machine.

IMO, 2Gb RAM is far too little. For internet only you need 4-8Gb nowadays.

A few years ago my PC with 2Gb has been always struggling to cope at ~90-95%.

    Now, with 16Gb, it's always above 4Gb.
That said, I always have 20+ tabs open.

These threads are always the same. Lots of links to companies that don't actually tell you what components they are using.
Which power supply is in them?
    Which motherboards is being used?
    Wot no SSD?
I would always want to know exactly which components were being used. When they don't state the brand and model of PSU and motherboard I always expect cheap and nasty. The last thing I would want is a PC with a cheap and nasty PSU and motherboard.

People go for these prebuild for price.
OP can stand with his Acer with single core AMD Sempron, I don't see he will go for custom build.
And Acer PSU and mobo are poor anyway.

If you want a grumble mate, go to the pub and chew the barman's ear or alternatively make a recommendation. For example, £230 notes for this i3-4160 system which is cheap an cheerful and will do everything the OP requires with scope for future GPU upgrades as it has a 500w psu:

    Cube Midi Core i3

Intel Core i3 4160 3.6Ghz Dual Core Processor
    Cooler Master Elite 343
    MSI H81M-E33 Motherboard
    Kingston ValueRAM 1x 4GB
    Samsung Internal Black DVD RW
Black Internal PC USB Internal 3.5" 23-in-1 Memory Card Reader
    500W PSU
    Seagate Barracuda 500GB HDD
Windows Bing 8.1 with Free Upgrade to Windows 10*
    TP-Link TL-WN781ND 150Mbps Wireless PCI Express Adapter
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.

    it could be a/v?

Personally I would download a free Mint disk, and boot off that to see if there is any noticeable difference

This looks very good! I guess the only thing I would need to do is to double the RAM?

Start with 4Gb and keep your eye on the usage %. My wife is happy with 4Gb. Adding memory isn't a problem, you can do this at any time and the prices keep dropping
