Algarve 2016 Car Hire

Options
Help needed.
Please can forum users help with which company is best and good value to use to hire a car for 1 week .
I have been trying to do some research myself, but it seems that they are all crooks and try to scam you for damage or scratches etc.
Any good experiences from this summer etc would be much appreciated.
Many thanks

  • Booked with Economy cars this summer and last.
Excellent service both times. Reasonable price and very good cars.
Cars were from "Drive 4 fun". Airport pick up and drop off.
  • I used Enjoy car hire. I sweated a bit as they were so much cheaper than all the rest but they were no problem. The pick up area is a zoo, but that applies really to whomever you're using

I've used the broker Auto Europe on many occasions and always been happy. I used them in January and September this year for pick up and drop off hire from Faro airport. One of the reasons I like them is that you can cancel without penalty right up to car hire collection. This means that if you find a better deal either with them or someone else you can make a new booking and cancel the old one.

If you are planning on crossing the boarder into Spain be aware that most rental companies charge additional insurance. Avis was the only company I found in September that did not charge extra.

Remember to buy excess insurance cover via someone like Insurance4carhire as it is much cheaper than taking it out via the broker or rental agent but also be aware that if you do this the rental company will "block" approx. 1200-1500 euros on your credit card - this is not a scam but standard practice as in the event of an accident they would charge you the excess and you would claim it back from your insurer. No accident, no payment.

Be aware of the fuel policy as some companies look to offer a cheap deal but charge you for a full tank of fuel plus a refuelling charge which can make it more expensive than a full to full hire.

Finally, if you do use my recommendations then go via the Topcashback site, register with them and you should get a bit of cash back for a completed purchase.
Sorry I can't think of anything profound, clever or witty to write here.

If a comparison site comes up with Goldcar, make sure you have read their reviews .
  • I hired from Luzcar last summer after reading many good reviews. Reasonable prices and the booking, collecting and returning went smoothly and easily.

We travel to the Algarve a lot. Always use ZitAutos. Never had a problem with them, and competitive rates.
