O/S Daily Thread for Sunday 29th November

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine.

Yesterday was relatively peaceful, as in only one difficult phone call.

It seems FIL is concerned about a missing ring belonging to MIL, it's not in her jewellery box. FIL knows definitely that MIL was wearing it 2 weeks ago when she was in the hospice.

Well I know exactly where it is, it is on my finger, she gave it to me October 2014.

FIL was there when she gave it to me but denies all knowledge, hey ho the joy continues.

I knitted another scarf yesterday I just need to cast off and then start the last one.

I had a Tesco delivery booked for between 3 & 4, it didn't arrive until 6:30, the poor driver was very apologetic, they were 3 driver's short and everywhere he went he was getting shouted at.

The people over the road had a party yesterday, it started around 10pm & gawd knows what time it finished, there are sometimes advantages to being deaf.

Judi, I hope you get the situation sorted with your mum.

LW, do you have any lodgers booked in over Christmas?

Roast beef for lunch today, I'm cooking it in the slow cooker on a bed of carrots & onions.

    Have a good day everyone.

    Hugs Hester

  • Good morning, thank you Hester for starting the thread.
I spent a couple of lovely days staying with family and spent most of Friday with my mum.

Unfortunately on the way back, standing room only on the train, someone vomited all over me and although I had a change of clothes, grubby but not stinky, I could do nothing about my shoes or jacket until I got home. Everything washed now but yuck, just yuck.

When I told mum on the phone, she just hooted with laughter so at least that is her cheered up.

I can deal with dirt, a little poo does not faze me but I have real problems with vomit - fortunate that I wasn't sick too, as that is my usual response. Oh well, all dealt with now.

Washing done, more loads to go in, raining though so cannot hang outside. My OS things today will be staying in and cleaning the bathroom, how it got like that in two days is a mystery.

Also am bit p**d off as I have done extra work which is fee-paid, but payment not made and I would have liked that money now - half of it has been owing for 4 months now. Luckily I don't totally need it, but this the only time of year when I tend to watch the pennies a bit less. So good job I have a reserve.

Rant over, apologies for offloading. I typed unloading first but I think that is what happened to me!

And Hester, sorry to hear that about the ring, it just goes on, doesn't it.

In the spirit of extravagance, I bought 'artisan' sausages so we will have those tonight, they are a bit massive but DS tends to be hollow inside so they will get eaten. He has just had a bacon sandwich, I managed to drop one piece of bacon down the side of the cooker so will have to get that moved to fish it out for the bin.

That is 3 things, good, I need not worry about disaster #3.

I need toast, this is an urgent requirement.

Morning all. We've had rain for the best part of the night but the wind seemed to ease as the night wore on. But I now hear it's set to come back!

We have the two youngest DGDs all day and overnight. It's DD's weekend to work and when that happens the girls are at their dads all weekend. However today he and his GF are taking the eldest to London for the Harry Potter studio tour so guess who has been delegated to stand in! As she is on an early shift tomorrow they are here all night too for the school run tomorrow. Eldest DGD is still off for teacher training so they are staying overnight in London. Not the best of weather for driving down the motorway today so I'll be relieved to hear they have got there safely.

So, other than playing games etc not a lot is planned for today! We love them all dearly but some time they can be hard work! It should be marginally easier with only two of them as the younger two play well together and we don't get as much squabbling!

I braved the elements yesterday after all and went to Asda to get my 2 big bottles of Baileys (but will it make Christmas?!) and 2 joints of Topside. One I cut in half and the other into three and they are now stashed away in the freezer. A bargain at £4 a kilo and they are lovely and lean.

Have a good day all ((((HUGS))))) to those wanting/needing them and take care xx

Cross posting! HESTER your troubles are never ending. I so feel for you. AOD what an awful thing to happen. I don't think I would have coped as well as you. Please say it wasn't a drunk as that would have been even worse!

    Morning everyone,

Up early today as my older lady needed an urgent comfort break, cloudy but dry at the moment, hope it stays that way as would like to get the dog's beds washed.

Other than that looks like I need to get some baking done, my DOH has a hankering for some of my Madeira cake with custard so that's on the menu, will also do a beef stew and then that can be gently simmering while I'm at the yard.
So quiet Sunday for us, the calendar is fast getting filled up for December so will make the most of it, get well wishes to all that are poorly.

    Have a good day x

    Morning everyone.

The storm raged all night here too. It looks calm now but Clodagh is set to hit later I think.

Yesterday I slept for most of the day, most surprising as I felt a lot better, though my body obviously needed it. And I slept all through the night too.

Today I've got a pre-arranged date with an elderly neighbour to help her with some IT stuff. It's rearranged from about ten days ago when I called off. At least I have part of a voice today. I forgot about it when I said I wouldn't talk today but I can't put her off again.

If all's well after that I'll zoom into town and pick up a few veggies and some apples. That'll be my day.

TA - you have a tiring day ahead. I really admire those who look Fter their DGC so much. Hope they aren't too bouncy.

Right, need to start my day. Happy Saturday everyone.

    Morning everyone

Light here, wind seems to have died down, and it's now drying up underfoot - it's been either wet or damp all week. We are forecast changeable weather today - so we could be back to wet by tonight.

DH in the bath, I've now eaten brekkie, and will be jumping in the shower in a mo. Boys still in their pits. Today will be a lazy day - we'll be watching the tennis and then the GP - bad timing as they are both on at the same time. DS1 has said to watch the tennis and record GP as we know who's won the Championship. Hoping the tennis will be a good match too.

Lunch today will be roast pork, joint is quite big, I went to buy lamb but it was on offer and SM had sold out, so we have pork, that was on offer also, so not too bad, and definitely alot cheaper than the lamb would have been even on offer. I'll serve it with all the normal bits, roasties, mash, brussels, carrots, peas and green beans, yorkshires and gravy.

My mum is not so good at the mo, she had another fall nearly 2 weeks ago, and has injured one of her knees, (she's already had both knees replaced a few years back), the injured knee is very swollen, although when she did it - it was massive, they xrayed it to see if something was broken which it wasn't but then wouldn't and couldn't do anymore due to the swelling and the amount of pain mum was in, she's been given crutches and a velcro support that you strap round your leg. Pain meds prescribed didn't touch the pain and dad finished up begging at the pharmacy for some sort of pain relief - which he did get and they do help but she's certainly not pain free. She goes back on Weds and hopefully they can get a clearer picture of whats what. Problem being is she's become very depressed and also she's diabetic and has some sort of neurological problem (I've said to my bro and sis's that I think she's got early stage alzheimers or parkinsons - at that maybe it should be investigated but no-one wants to do anything so I just leave them to it, I've never been in best favour so I do what's needed and try to keep out of it - it's all historical stuff I won't bore you with the details). Just very difficult to see people struggling and there's not a huge amount you can do.

We got a couple of jobs done yesterday, visited both sets of parents, then came home and watched the tennis. I picked up lunch from the chippy yesterday lunchtime, so I re-jigged the menu. So will do that further for comings nights' dinners to use up what I have in fridge.

    Have peaceful Sundays' everyone x

    Keep safe and well x

    Morning all.

Hester I share your pain over the ring your Mil gave you.

My Mother no longer owns a scrap of jewellery. My brother had been nagging Mom for years for any old scraps of gold she no longer used and some months back her wedding ring to my Step Father went missing. The carers put it in an envelope which was sealed and put in a drawer. Some weeks later the envelope was ripped open and the ring gone. I know where it's gone. It just so happens that in Mom's will she left her jewellery to me. Of course I won't kick up a fuss. I'm beyond that. They had better not accuse me of taking it either.

What my brother lacks in brains, he gains in slyness and deviousness. He's always been the same.

I had a rubbish nights sleep. Stewing over Mother and hubby was restless too.

Not sure what's happening today. I know SIL has asked hubby to look at their extractor fan as it stopped working ages ago. A bit of a waste of time going really as I am pretty certain hubby will take one look at it and say "it's old, get a new one".

    Onwards and forwards

    Have a great day all

Good Morning chum, wet and windy here in north Kent at the moment

Oh H/H you poor soul,as if you haven't had enough to deal with over the past few months.sounds like you FIL is getting groomed by the evil BIL & SIL. try to rise above it honey Keep your MIL's ring as she wanted you to have it,sounds like she had a pretty good idea what the rest of the family were like. Try to enjoy a peaceful Sunday with your OH and family.

The DGS were good lads last night and this morning I am getting them to tidy up the sitting room and dining room as I said it will be nice for Mum and Dad coming home.
They don't know that their big brother Ben is driving with his g/f down from Norwich for a big family celebratory dinner for their Dad for his birthday :):):) I will peel and prep the veg shortly and DGS Jack is going to hoover through for me.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Ben bless him and his g/f Katie as well.

DGS Henry went off to do his paper round this morning all wrapped up and I shall make him a nice toasted bacon sandwich when he get back home as he will be cold.
Hope everyone has a good day whatever you are doing and keep warm and dry
    Cheers JackieO xxxx
