  • Yes, the application asks of any Financial Commitments (mortage, bank loans, overdraftm credit card, divorce and child maintaiance orders etc.).

To reiterat at the time of filing out the form, I had delt with the arrestment, paid Scottish Power back in full and on time. Since posting the form the problems with CT and telephone have occured. My other issue us because I have paid bills late in the past I feel I've shot myself in the foot.

Gettingthingsdone - where can I read litriture about getting the charges back? I honestly don't think I have a good case for getting anything back, it is my own stupid fault after all.

    Edit.

I have statements for the past 2-3 years. Where do I go from here?
  • At the moment bank charges which exceed the bank's costs are unlawful. The general upshot is that the banks will not reveal their costs and will therefore give you back the unlawful charges they have collected over the last 6 years. There is a link on the main moneysaving home page that will take you to the appropriate section.

It's dead easy, and all the claims I have made have been paid, which has meant £thousands back to me. The situation is coming to a head at the moment as basically the courts were getting annoyed with the banks, so read the latest details from Martin.

It also applies to credit card charges if you have had those as well.

  • This sounds like the perfect way to sort out the overdraft once and for all, I just want it gone! :(

I'm getting charges on a monthly basis... forgive me for being skeptical, but will I be taken seriously, I don't want to look like a chancer. If I remember correctly, in October my charge was at least £100, so if what you are saying is true, can I claim it back? Even if it's my fault?

Sorry to be a pest, it's all a bit new to me....

Just a thought Vince, but Southern Scouser has helped quite a few peeps on here get a bit of free money, on average around £100 - risk free.

If you haven't done it yet, send him a pm and he'll tell you all about it ;)

I think I'm confused and concerned... *sigh* nevertheless, you're all so wonderully helpful and lovely here. thank you, I really, really appreciate it.
  • Vince, you can claim it all back for the last 6 years. Read the section on here or go to consumeractiongroup.

    1. Total all your fees for the last 6 years. If you don't have the statements to hand (who does!?) then you can request them under the data protection act for £10.
    2. Ask your bank for the money back - give them 14 days
    3. After 14 days, warn them that you are going to take them to court in 14 days
    4. Start a small claims case against your bank
    5. Take them to court - the Banks always pay up before the case starts

At some point they will pay up.

HOWEVER, the situation has changed slightly as 1000's of people have been claiming back £millions and the courts are p*ssed off with the way that banks have been stringing out the process. Martin's section on this will tell you what the current state of play is.

It is very straight-forward and none of my banks closed my account or have taken against me...

  • All good suggestions above. Can you set up direct debits for your bills, so payments go out on time? That's the only way I manage to keep on top and pay all my bills ;)

Dont worry Vince, it is all a bit confusing to begin with.

Soon becomes addictive and exciting though :D

I definately will be! i've spoken to my flat mate about possibly taking a few things off my hands as well, especially CT. She will revert back to me she's looked at her own afairs. *crosses fingers*

Virgin Media should be on DD, at least I'll have £5 less going out, I'm currently looking to reduce broadband down from £25 to £10 (4mb to 2mb), so fingers crossed I should have that done tomorrow or Tuesday.

i just wish I could get rid of the mobile phone contract! But i can only reduce this in December down to £20.

With regard to the claims to the bank, I live in Scotland, my understand that the claims are much smaller than those in England?

Right... your flat mate taking things "off your hands".... well this fills me with a little bit of dread... You're firstly NOT taking responcibility for things by passing them to someone else to be responcible for. Secondly - you are placing a LOT of trust in someone else being respocible for things that can in future come back to haunt you. What I think you should do is kepe it in your name and from YOUR account but have her pay the amount into your account to cover it. The house/flat/property is in you name right? By trusting her to pay it you're allowing control of the only tax that you can still end up in jail for not paying to go to someone else! And I bet you they won't care about a "gentlemens agreement" between you for her to pay it if your name is on the papers.
You want to join the police... then start proving to yourself you can take on these responcibilities and handle them. A lot of police work is dull paper work and form filling - if you do it wrong or "can't be bothered" then people who should be in jail can walk free... What if next time they DUI they kill someone? But last time they walked off with not even a warning because your paperwork was not on time or not filled in properly?
You have till next year to make these things second nature instead of a laborious task you want to pass on to someone else.
I'm possibly being a little harsh here, but I know several people in the police force, some are very good friends, and I can just see potential problems with this not taking responcibility for the bills (although well done for feeling the bank charges "were your own fault so why are you entitled to any back?" - I'd be inclined to agree, but I do think the charges applied are out of proportion to what charges or costs the bank incurs... Maybe I'd not feel so bad if when they are a day late applying funds to OUR accounts WE get to charge them... hmmm now THERE is an idea ;) )
