Right... you haven't ruined your chances to join the police (although check with your local force that you wish to join). The requirements as stated on the home office pages say the following about financial status:
    Financial status

Applicants will have their financial status checked.
These checks are carried out because police officers have access to privileged information, which may make them vulnerable to corruption.
Applicants with outstanding County Court judgements, who have been registered bankrupt with outstanding debts, will be rejected. If you have discharged bankruptcy debts then you will need to provide a Certificate of Satisfaction with your application.
If you have any concerns, contact your chosen force for more information.
    See here for details :)

Please post your COMPLETE SOA - that includes absolutely anything and saying you don't buy birthday presents that much... well that means you buy SOME and we need to know these costs if we are to give you a full run down on how you can save money and get your finances in order as soon as possible.
I wouldn't bother applying to the police until you have cleared all your debts and preferably proved you can keep it organised for a while like maybe 6 months?

  • So am I right in thinking that your debts are:

    £140 to carphone warehouse
    £2000 overdraft
    £350 council

Is the council debt council tax? If so this is your priority. Next, settle the carphone warehouse one. With £394.50 'spare' each month this shouldn't be a problem. Then I would start chipping away at repaying your OD.

What monthly payments are you making for debt at the moment?

I called the Council and I have arranged to pay the Council Tax over the course of 2 months, but I received the letter regarding the mobile on Friday. I want to change the Council Tax repayments to 3 months so I can also manage the phone debt which has now been passed over to a debt collection agency who i will phone tomorrow morning on my way to work.

The form has already been sent in. It looks like I might have to put the application on hold, I'm to do the entry test in October, the intake is for January... :(

I'm awaiting my credit report to see if I have any CCJs, I'm almost positive I don't. As for bancruptcy, nothing like that. I'm just a divv for not paying my bills on time, over the past 3 months is where I have encured the CT and phone bills.

I don't go out (all friends have moved on etc etc), b'day presents don't happen often the last was in June, nothing happening until Christmas.

A lot of the bounced DD happened at the start of the year, the bank account arrestment was in May/June.

OK, one thing you're going to have to do is discover what has been driving you to pay your bills late. I appreciate you accept you've been a divvy but this isn't a reason for late bill paying.
You need to develop some insight, handy for a job in the police, about what makes you tick - why you behave the way you do - what motivates you - what demotivates you - do your organisational skills need improving- that kind of stuff. Until you know precisly why things have got to this state you could be in danger of continuing to make the same mistakes with your finances. HTH
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

For birthday presents have you joined pigsback? It's good for getting vouchers to buy pressies, if you send me a PM i'd be happy to refer you. Also use quidco for any purchases you make on the net to get a bit of cashback.
Trying to sort my life out, and I'm going to get there!
  • Just to add to the advice here, you would know if you had CCJs because you'd have received court papers to deal with. So if you haven't had those, then you've no CCJs but you may have defaults on your Account.

Related to the post about Quidco - if you join that and join up to Credit Expert through Quidco you can get your credit record instantly to print out (for free) and also get £5.00 into your Quidco account. Just remember to then cancel the free trial of Credit Expert and no charges will be incurred.

Good luck with the police and don't do anything rash. I would think there is someone there (in human resources??) you could chat confidentially to about your application rather than just panicking and putting the application on hold - which might just make you look flaky..?
Proud to be dealing with my debt!

  • I'm a PA.... pretty ironic considering I've not been so organised with regards to my own life.
  • PurpleDelly, I've never received court papers thankfully, never ever. Only letters from debt collecting agencies. I just anticipate to have an insane amount of defaults on the account.

I'd like to look in to Quidco actually...

That's the thing, I'm so close to calling up recruitment to say, when I applied i only had the overdraft (which i declared on the application form) since the application, I have fallen behind on CT and phone.

So prior to sending of the application form I only had the overdraft to be concerned about. In the last 3-4 months I've gotten in to even more of a mess as if paying bills late wasn't bad enough.
  • Was your financial situation something that you were asked about on the application form?
Proud to be dealing with my debt!

  • Get those bank charges back!! I was in a similar situation and used the money to clear my overdraft(s) altogether - I've found it a lot easier to organise myself ever since.
