before you do, lay the pin across a couple pieces of wood or whatever,

and 'tap' it in the middle, to put a slight bend in it, should help to hold it in.

Though keep you eye on things, you might eventually need the new hinge.
  • Hello,

The most difficult part is yet to come. The screws will be seized.

The black dust you see is normal wear and tear; the other hinge has it.

How do you get other small jobs done, every house has them?

If you were my neighbour, and struggling, I'd do it for free.

Yes, I'd like to do this.

    Some questions:
    1) The top cap is still in place. Should I remove it? Or go from the bottom?
    2) Two washers have come off and would have to be reinserted as well.
    3) What about the bottom cap? Should I just use the spindle "bending" method I have been suggested below, with no cap at all. I suspect the adhesive tape I have in place now won't "cut it" long term.

Thank you again for your help with this. And yes I wish I had a neighbour to show me, but I'm not sure I'd swap it with fellow MSEs.
  • Hi,

you can try inserting from the bottom, get the washers in place before you start, then either push pin up with flat blade screwdriver, or tap up with a hammer.

If you do put a kink in it you will feel a bit of resistance when you reach that bit, but keep pushing/tapping.

If you can't get it done from the bottom. then plan B, insert from top.

put the hinge back in, if the door is working, it's probably best not to worry about it too much, it's just a hinge.

If it starts to work it's way loose in 5 months time, just tap it back down again

spindle bending could backfire, they are supposed to be straight not bent

it's still impossible to see any detail in the photo's
