Door hinge broke - how to fix?

Hi

First off excuse my potentially wrong terminology. It's all rather new to me.

The bathroom door bottom hinge seems to have given way, and the door is now hanging on the top one only. The top one seems to be feeling the strain and there is a black substance pouring off the top hinge as well.

I have done some research before posting and have found a rather relevant post http://goo.gl/s1vl6J . I am in a similar situation, but the central pin (spindle?) seems to be broken.

I have taken some pictures to illustrate my predicament. Here are a couple, of the piece itself as taken:
https://goo.gl/9qDgd1

And here is the rest. I have tried to take a larger number as some of them are so poor:

Questions - how do I go about fixing this? There is some guidance in the previous post but not enough to get me started.

I suppose I'll have to buy the pin (spindle?) in the picture from somewhere, and I'll take the broken piece along. Any moneysaving suggestion on where to go for this?

Also what about the "washer" (the small metallic circular object visible in the pics)?

Thanks in advance for any inputs

OMG- go to bed and worry about it when the shops are open.
In the time its taken you to take and post 40 pictures on the interwebby, you could have removed the hinge, walked to a DIY shop and spent a couple of quid on a new hinge.

Assuming you know how a screwdriver works... If not, ask in the shop,. Good luck; we all had to start our DIY journey somewhere.

The shops will be open tomorrow, hence I'm getting ready per time. I appreciate your optimism, but heralding into the world of DYI without proper preparation has generated some unsightly and expensive results in the past.

I am even more paranoid when a heavy door is involved.

Anyway - thanks for the suggestion. I had not thought about unscrewing and replacing the full thing.
Which shops do you suggest? Is it that cheap in any shop? I know that small DIY shops can be expensive.

I did in fact try to "have a go at it". Some things I've noticed:
    1) The central pin does _not_ in fact appear to be broken. Just covered in a sticky black substance.
    2) There are 4 washers in total in the middle of the hinge. 2 have come out and I have recovered them.
    3) There are two caps in addition to the washers. A top cap and bottom cap. I don't seem to be able to find the bottom one. I assume the pin has slipped from the bottom.

Without the bottom cap, is my only option to replace the full thing? Not a biggie if it is as cheap as suggested.

    Many thanks
Yours DIY-impaired but very fast typer.

The flash was on, together with the multi-shot feature. I suspect the two don't like working in a coordinated fashion.

There is indeed a macro function thank you for that! Not sure if I can use it together with the multi-shot but I'll give it a go.

Ah! And thanks for the suggestion about a temporary nail. The only way to push this in is to remove the top cap though, which is still in place... I'll give it a go.

EDIT: I have inserted an IKEA key from the bottom and stuck a piece of adhesive tape to avoid it falling off. Very rudimental but very functional. TY.

EDIT: Just realised - wickes is a reference to the shop where to buy it - thanks for that as well.

  • Hi,

woah, slow down, and forget all that rubbish about the pin, washers and caps, you need a new hinge, possibly two, as you might as well change the top one now, if looking dodgy.

Open the door to allow access to all screws, prop up the front edge of door with a piece of wood or a book.

Remove the screws (screwing anti-clockwise) and the broken hinge parts, retain the screws.

Tell your wife and/or kids not to touch the door, if they need to use the loo they need to leave the door open.

Now you're going shopping, Wickes or B&Q type places.

Take the hinge parts with you for comparison but you want a hinge like this, your pics look like brass, but may be a cheaper version, note the hole layout.

So, you're home now, have a coffee to chill, and contemplate next task.

Right, clear the bathroom of wife/kids, you don't want any distractions.

Offer up the new hinge to the wall side of door and insert the screws, then do the same on door side, you might have to shoogle a bit to get things lined up, tighten screws on both sides (clockwise), check door swings freely.

Get another coffee and have a seat on the loo and admire your work. :D

Change top hinge, if not too stressed.

    Good luck. ;)

OP, you are not seriously expecting to be able to go out and buy the spindle of a hinge are you?
Instead of wasting your time taking numerous useless photos you should have been replacing the hinge pin with a temporary replacement, like a nail or an Allen key.
It's not exactly rocket science to buy and install a new hinge. You will probably not be able to buy a single, so you buy a pair and only use one of them. Wedge the door up , remove the hinge and take it to Wickes or somewhere similar to buy a replacement with the same screw hole pattern. If it doesn't match the existing hinge in appearance then replace both of them. It is hardly something to get stressed over. The only tool you need is a screwdriver. Maybe have someone with you to prevent the door getting out of control when it has only one hinge. Most internal doors are extremely light anyway..
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

frugalmacdugal & 27col - what can I say - thank you go for the gentle intro to DIY. I'm sure I'll be fine with all this guidance, but if not, I'll be back.

One last point to note though. Something I have realised after the first post:
The spindle is NOT broken. There are no broken parts.
There is only a *missing* bottom cap.

In any case, I take it is not advisable to try and push the spindle back in because of the following:
    1) I won't be finding the bottom cap as a spare replacement on its own / just easier to replace the full thing.
    2) Even if I was the find the bottom part, it would be just fiddly / impossible to reassamble the hinge. I.e. once things come off it is BROKEN, even if all pieces are there, and it has to be fully replaced. I'd like to know this even if not directly related to my current problem - in case I come across this situation in the future.

    Thanks again amazing MSErs.
