I'm amazed a company can exist in this day and age that doesn't have some form of approval process for overtime?

What would happen if you left for the night and forgot to clock out? I assume you wouldn't get paid overtime for all the hours until you clocked in the next day...
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

If it works as the OP explained then it is taking money out of the company without putting in anything productive; it sounds like the company is maybe needing to be careful with costs which could indicate that there might be trouble ahead.

Measures to save cash are likely to affect the OP in one way or another - I'd be annoyed and consider it 'my business' if someone else in the company had decided they deserved reward for doing nothing.
unless you own the company and fix budgets and wages. it's really not your concern when someone else clocks on or off. especially when you don't know the 100% specifics of their employment. You can guess and speculate ll you want but as it's not your contract you know know anything for sure.

    In short...

    Stay in your lane.

Every company I have worked for has had clocking on requirements in some or all departments. None of those employers ever automatically pay overtime based on what the clock card says, it always has to be signed off by supervisor/manager. OP how can you be sure that this employee is being paid for additional hours every, single day?

    how does this affect you?!

The same way it would affect anyone else working their I suppose.

This guy is taking money from the company, it is essentially theft. That money has to come from somewhere, if several members of staff were doing this it would add up and be a sizeable chunk from the wages budget... The budget for example that pays the OP's wages.

Personally, i'd shop him in the same way i'd shop someone I caught stealing money from a till at work because it's the same thing.

But i'd also make pretty sure I knew he was definitely getting paid overtime for his early clock ins first, just because you clock in early it doesn't mean you get paid for it as most clocking in systems i've come across have some sort of secondary authorisation system for overtime and don't just use clocking in times.

"The workshop controller was actually sent on a course last week which was all about ways in which he could save money."

If senior management are actually paying time +half overtime based on clocking on times and at the same time sending people on courses to save money then quite frankly they deserve it.

But I am almost certain they won't be. Overtime payment is not automatic, no way!
